My VX220 gets 30mpg without trying. A K series Elise or Caterham is even better, people claim to get 40mpg in normal driving!
Yeah, a "normal" A/B-road cross-country drive in my K-series car (during which I hardly drive gently) typically gives about 40mpg.

The Clio 182 gives remarkably good fuel economy even when in a hurry. Mine averaged a consistent 40mpg (on super) all the time I owned it and it was driven as hard as there was space to do so.

Same with my K series VVC Libra.

Bloody great long distance commuter!

Would need to be small and light with limited power to stand a chance I would guess.
Reckon so - had an 1100 AX many years ago, company car so it got the full treatment on every drive. Caned across back roads, lanes, A roads, motorways and everywhere else. Can't remember dropping below 38mpg, including a blast to London and back, four-up, flat out at an indicated 3-digits.

In the same mould, Mk1 Fiat Punto Sporting - 32-34mpg no matter how it was driven. And it was driven in much the same way as that AX. Motorway cruising was done at around 5000rpm, the rev limiter was probably nudged during every journey of more than 10 minutes, and I hit the limiter in 5th more than once. Also incredibly reliable too, I put it down to the way it was driven... biggrin

From 23mpg driven normally to 17mpg when driven hard i think my Subaru GTB is quite economical in that sense. hehe

I don't think there's a petrol car on the planet that's 30mpg while driven hard.

Unless it's electric with a petrol range extender/generator on board smile
im sure theres plenty
Are we talking about "spirited driving"?

Or actually caning it?

because you will be lucky to best 20mpg flat out whatever the vehicle flat out.

RX8 gets 18ish however you drive it biggrin
I'm befuddled by all these 1*2 drivers saying they get over 30 when caning it - I only get mid 30's in 'normal' driving.

My Clio Trophy gets 30mpg driven pretty hard. 40mpg if pootling everywhere. I've tended to get 33-34mpg in mixed use.
Agree with this - my 182 was amazing considering the performance.

My 172 Cup leads a hard life, either a shortish commute or hillclimbing, rarely gets used for 20ml + journeys & still returns an average of 27+ MPG!

I guess many lightweight petrol cars will do 30+ MPG?

Toyota Aygo manages pretty well even if you're pressing on. It's got stupidly long gearing, especially in 3rd & 4th plus a 3 pot engine, so it seems natural to leave it in 2nd until it's properly spinning before changing up. Acceleration above 60mph is glacial though.

Those were the numbers I used to get, too.

yes

My best mate had one for a while, it returned 16mpg on his commute (4miles of traffic each way) and 18-20mpg if he took it out for a proper weekend thrashing. hehe

My nicest mk11 MR2 returned about 25mpg if i ragged it and about 30mpg if i took it easy. Once i realised it didn't make much of a difference i had a rule with that car. I promised it would hit the redline on every journey. So it got ragged senseless from cold everyday and worked faultlessly. biggrin

Nope, it gets much worse mileage when on track days! I average 23 mpg with a 70/30 highway/city mix of driving but on the track I don't break 10 mpg, and some guys who drive their RX-8's even harder on track see around 8 mpg!

In terms of other cars out there other than maybe a Nissan Micra or it's equivalent, I doubt you would see more than 20 mpg in a track situation. Your typical slew of PHer cars would likely achieve mpg figures of 2 mpg - 15 mpg on track.

The worst I've got from my E46 325i wagon was 35mpg, and that was from a day of full-on caning it.

Well I lie actually, it was about half that, but then again LPG is half the price of petrol.

Another 182 driver!

On track having the st kicked out of it then it's in the low/mid teens.

Normal "mixed" driving gets low 30s. (By this, I mean not driving like a tt, sensible in 30/40 limits, pushing on at other times)

When I did a motorway commute it would do high 30s

Currently I do a 6 mile round trip to the station each day so it doesn't even get hot and I tend to have to press on to not miss my train! It still does 30.

Agreed - I find it quite liberating knowing that fuel economy is relatively unchanged depending on how hard you drive whistle

We have a 2011 Cooper S JCW. Doesn't get driven slowly at all really. Just briskly everywhere, plus the occasional hoon. 31mpg average!

Saxo VTS

Conforming to the typical loutish behaviour of a young Saxo driver, you can imagine I rarely hung about!
