Thanks for the input guys, I think that's what it's going to come down too. Really need to start looking around at quotes it seems!

I've had 2 older women on my insurance since I passed as additional drivers, massively dropped the prices! Would they not find a way to make it my fault though for listing my work instead of full time education? I know they like to get out of any claim if things go wrong! Definitely going to give some of these private companies a ring they seem to be the best bet now! Most of the increase in premium this year seems to be due to the non fault crash I was in this year, makes it not even worth claiming in future unless it's a write off!

Started looking more into the Twingo at first the looks put me off but they're starting to grow on me! Is the cup chassis worth going for or just the standard 133?

Elephant wanted 1.9 on the Civic but I'll see how some other companies quote me on it now
My insurance was Diamond, which is the same as admiral and a couple. Of others I think.

List your work if you want, insurance companies don't have much play when it comes to dodging claims nowadays - Twin1's dissertation is on this subject.

Definitely cup suspension, it gives you the better alloys as well so it looks less like your gran's shopping car...

Mpg depends on how you drive,in the summer I was seeing 40+ Just going up and down the M46 in light traffic, right now it's all rush hour traffic and like 30, not so bad smile

get a mk2 toyota mr2!

Cheapest car for me to insure, cheaper than a corsa!

Im only 20 and have 1 years NCB, that was with Zenith.

2k would get you an immaculate one.

Loved mine, was a sense of occasion everytime you got into it, pop up lights as well!

And surprisingly got a fair few comments from people 'nice car mate'

Not bad for a £600 toyota!

How new we talking? within budget?
My mistake - forgot the £6k budget.

Wouldn't discount one of the older generation Cooper hatches though - I do love a Mini as it's distinctly good fun to throw around on a b-road when you get the chance and hold good value. Would say that if you're buying a second hand MINI to try and get one with a chili pack as the bog standard can be a bit bare on spec for older models.

What have you heard about the roof? Never had a problem with mine, after nearly 9 years. As for the VX similarity to the MR2, almost, but not quite. My wife has an MR2 Mk3 and I had a Mk2 before the VX. They're fun and all, but not a patch on the VX IMO.
I think I read somewhere they were a bit leaky like a S1 Elise. My question was more aimed at the daily driver aspect as VX220 is clearly a bit more hardcore than the MR2 roadster . As per james_gt3rs, I would probably get one with a hard top, to be on the safe side during the winter months.
Sorry for the delayed reply, I've never had a leaky roof problem since ownership. Not to any huge extent, only when waqshing the car some water finds it's way down the inside of the windows. Never had a problem due to rain. I know a few guys who've used theirs as a daily driver, it is quite raw, but not bad enough that you'll get a bad back from driving regularly. There are guys that use their Elises daily and the VX is a nicer ride than an Elise. Saying that, there are owners that get so fed-up with the rawness and the PITA entry and exit of the car that they get rid pretty quickly. If you haven't driven one, then definitely try and get a test-drive and see how you get on.

When I got rid of my Mk2, my missus suggested the Mk3 and I didn't get one because it was a bit girly IMHO. The Mk2 was much nicer. Which is how I ended up getting the VX. That said, my missus ended up getting a Mk3 shortly after I got the VX and it is a great car, handles beautifully and does everything the OP would want. The second gen Mk3's like my wife's have slightly nicer styling and an LSD too, which is good. Not sure about MPG, as I don't really worry about that, if you want a quick car, MPG is something that just "is", if you see what I mean.

If I were in the OP's position, I'd be busting a gut to get a really decent Mk2 MR2, or a Gen 7 Celica. As has been mentioned insurance is a bit of a black art, I don't get how they can justify some of the quotes, so just hit the comparison websites one evening and get quotes for everything your interested in and see what comes out.

I renewed the insurance on my cars recently (they all run-out on the same day) and the difference between high and low quotes was ridiculous, the VX ranged from £180-£2500!! (I'm an old git by the way, comparatively at 42 anyway).

Just a quick input;

Never assume anything with insurance.

I'm 20 and have insured my car for just under £1k. 3.2 litres and just over 6 to 60! driving

Mk5 Golf GTI is THE fun car to have for £5-6k

Anyone who tries to say it's boring clearly hasn't driven one. You might even end up with change left over to remap it for even more fun driving
