Intake noise is the most pertinent noise from my 182 until about 70, and that's with an aftermarket exhaust. I get pops and bangs on a hot day (182s run hilariously rich on start up) and provides enough extra noise for me to feel like I'm in a slightly special (compared to corsas and golf's! ) car. Not too much, not too little. Natural sound for the 2.0.

My point is, let the sound, the experience, be defined by the car itself, not think tanks and marketing.

That would annoy the piss out of me if it did it constantly. It does sound pretty good that porker. I completely agree that those pops and bangs that we normally associate with a well warmed motor/exhaust after a bit of spirited driving, like you say are much more appreciated, especially if you are on the cool down into a small village and it happens to coincide with a few close walls : )

I agree with what you say.
And I'm saying that as someone who loves to hear an engine's music.
When it's authentic.

I abhore contrived sounds, created for the sheer effect of it.

My impreza used to pop and crackle and fart and bang and squirt flames all over the shop - it was hilarious when you were in the mood but my god did it get tiresome when you were trying to mooch home in traffic.

The megane does it but only if you wind it up a bit first which is much less embarrassing.

I can't hear my exhaust above the induction noise. Hahahaha.

No artificial noises from my rear end (except when I have a curry of course yikes ) but then my method of transport is a TVR 390 SE biggrin

Awesome sound, no other car matches a TVR for sound quality IMHO...........
+1 thumbup

now with OTT EU regs, gone are the days when engineers are allowed to engineer a car and the exotic sound is just a natural by-product (it's all about minimal CO2 emissions nowadays). So now we have to live with artificially enhanced flavours (MSG, as I call it). So trying to get with modern times, I would settle for the Boxster because the video is based on not being gentle and setting the mode to sport-plus. In other words the pops and crackles were created on demand. You could slip in a higher gear if you wanted to be stealth. Also, the neighbour has one and the hairs on the back of my neck always prick up every time she starts her up. Just a shame it's followed by the drone of the PDK shifting up at low revs.

I heard the new S3 and TT blasting away and the popping in between gear changes just sounds stupid.

There are no more organic engines so in the same way they have acoustic engineers for engine noise, they have it on exhausts as well.

Shame.

Sounds great to me - if I close my eyes it could be a scene from Bullit!

I'm firmly against artificial noise but that's mechanically generated. If you don't like it learn to judge your decelerations so you're on an easing trailing throttle rather than backing off quite so sharply.

I don't understand the moaning on here sometimes wobble

The F Type has to be the 'dirtiest' sounding car on the road at the moment.
Absolutely love it.

I see your point Dan. It does sound awesome but strangely annoying...

I think whilst it sounds great at full chat that the popping is 'small penis' territory. 'Look at me, my car pops like a real race car.....' Certainly the case in London anyway.

I have a "pops & bangs" map as one of the selectable maps on the Syvecs ECU on my Sagaris but I rarely use it as, quite frankly, it genuinely sounds like it is damaging the engine.

It's quite amusing when used sparingly though. Especially in a tunnel -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0uzHiNYndsbiggrin
I was giggling like a child at that! What a car!
Thanks for making that.

A colleague of mine has an R8 that sounds utterly devilish on start up, especially when it's cold outside. The sportiest sounding thing in the car park though is still a 1999 CBR600 with an ART end can!

I was out in a Boxster S the other day. No contrived sports exhaust pops or crackles (which I quite enjoy) but plenty of flat six bark and growl enhanced by the PDK. The growling Jaguars are outrageous, in a good way.

Not everything has to grumble and groan like a clattery old diesel!

I agree whole heartedly. It has become a joke.

In my mind my neighbours’ own an annoying yapping little bd of a dog that ought to be silenced with a gun. Its endless yapping really irritates me, and I am at the age where I am world-class at being irritable.

I was winding myself up in to a fury about this yapping when I was asked by my other half, rather pointedly, “And what do you think that they feel about your car exhausts?”

So, I am off to get some tubing and bag and I’ll either gas the yapping little bd with exhaust fumes or, at worst, deafen it with an 82dB Exhaust pipe. At least it’s quieter than a gunshot, so I’ll have done my bit to make Britain quieter.

82dB seems pretty quiet for an exhaust on a performance car.

Not sure if I'd describe the F-Type as 'small penis territory'.
I think it's an extremely handsome and sophisticated looking car (certainly in coupe form) which sounds completely bonkers.
Brings a smile to my face anyway.
Wish my Z4MC was a bit more insane sounding. It looks daft enough.
Didn't Chris Harris describe the F-Type as a sounding like an old school american muscle car ?

Can I ask about your camera set up please? External mic? Either way it captures the sound brilliantly!!

I am wierd in that I would and do buy a car that makes a better noise over a faster one that sounds boring.

For example even though they are about the same hp when lightly fettled, and the 16v handles better, I would rather have a golf vr6 than a golf abf 16v.

I bought my 330ci based on noise as about 70% of my decision, i love the noise it makes with the golf tee mod when just pottering around. The motorway drone not so much. A diesel would be a much better option given the mileage I do but yawn noise.

I love porsche 911's and I think the image is so much better than the GTR. But the gtr sounds epic and 911's especially turbos sound dull. Only the GT3 sounds any good. The GTR's noise WOULD sway me!

For the same reason I would rather have an F430 than a 458. I think they sound better especially low down in the RPM range.
