If they can't make a decent noise, then it shouldn't be fake.

jamieduff1981 - well parties are normally full of laughter. Don't tell me you are all for fake noise. Are you an orange colour as well?

I think you both, others on the thread, and perhaps the article author himself, are missing a fundamental fact.

EVERY car exhaust noise is contrived.
Silencers/baffles/cats/pipe routing/pipe length all effect the sound coming out of the back (or side!) of cars, and in the development of EVERY car, there is a process of tuning to get this to sound 'right' (whatever 'right' may be for that particular car).

It's a case of where do you draw the line?, and surely the answer to that is totally subjective.
I wouldn't say all exhausts are contrived. Tuned yes, and that's fine by me. Like I said, I love a good exhaust note.

I'm sure we all accept that a reasonable amount of tuning is required to change the raw noise at the exhaust ports into somthing nice at the back of the car.

It's when you start deliberately changing the parameters of the engine or adding components (noise from speakers etc...) with the sole purpose of making the car sound better than it can manage on it's own that IMO it becomes contrived. At that point I would say the line has been crossed and it starts to become "fake".

Nope, but I do have purple and bright blue.

I'm not especially loud or gobby and am pretty normal. You're going to struggle to pidgeon hole me into one of your sets of character flaws - as you'll struggle to pidgeon hole everyone who doesn't choose invisible grey cars into "look at me" attention seekers.

Giving a car a fake sound is just shabby. No class.

The definition of contrived is 'deliberately created rather than arising naturally or spontaneously.'
Sounds a lot like 'tuning' to me.

If you don't like it, don't specify PSM, if you like it "out in the country" turn the sports mode off in town, that's what I do...making a mountain out a molehill methinks and try writing about something worth reading...

Class is a load of balls. The whole thing is fake. You just have a problem with people having fun you're not involved in.

Surely it is better for Porsches to sound like proper cars than the sewing machines of yester year?
Yes, absolutely.

But that Boxster's exhaust doesn't sound 'proper', it sounds horrible.

Proper exhaust noise is a by-product of excellent engineering, not a contrived, engineered-in, afterthought to hide the fact the engine's natural sound is sh*te! The Boxster's exhaust sound is just a loud, artificial-sounding, 'look at me I'm a twunt', marketing construct.

You old guys are just so stilted. The PSE, which you can of course switch off if you must, sounds awesome.

So it's boiling down to the old guys wanting ACDC at 10 some of the time v the young guys wanting Justin Bieber at 8 all the time.

No, it sounds like me on the toilet when I am trying to be quiet. And failing.

But that's exactly the thing. Implied speed/tttishness because of the theatrics is entirely unrelated to *actual* pace, which was well within acceptable boundaries. By way of example a dog walker waiting at the traffic island (c. 31sec) gave me a right mucky look even though I was doing about 20mph as I passed her. And the ridiculous blipping was the auto rev matching, not me. Honest guv!

I'd do another run with the camera on the speedo/rev counter to prove the point but the car's just been collected, which is somewhat inconvenient!

Cheers,

Dan

Read Sports Plus as 'track' or 'max attack' mode, it's not for slow speed pottering around. When the car is in 'Sport' it's significantly quieter, with less of the contrived crackles and pops.

For the sake of argument, can the 'experiment' be repeated with the car in normal mode to see hear the difference?

We know it sounds great at full chat. What Dan is saying is that the fake pops and crackles make you look like a plonker at pedestrian speeds.
