Read Sports Plus as 'track' or 'max attack' mode, it's not for slow speed pottering around. When the car is in 'Sport' it's significantly quieter, with less of the contrived crackles and pops.I'd do another run with the camera on the speedo/rev counter to prove the point but the car's just been collected, which is somewhat inconvenient!

Then there are the reverse snobs which haunt Pistonheads who couldn't afford these cars in a year of Sundays and want everyone dragged down to their diesel hatchback misery. Pitiful really.
Then there are those who just lack any meaningful content between their ears who switch the car on to its loudest mode then think they're being clever by complaining that it sounds a bit silly driving down the highstreet. They're right - it does - but they're also the weapons grade knobbers who switched it on to Sport Plus to drive down the fking Highstreet in the first place so who's fault is it that they look like dick heads whilst doing so?
Really fancied a GTS until I heard it. Same with the F-Type- flatulent gearchanges are just embarrassing particularly at city speeds. "Hey you, poor person on the pavement, look at me, I can afford a Jag and its really fast. Bet you wish you were as rich as me." Same with the seat bolsters that push you sideways even in slow corners so you remember its a fast car, even if you are commuting through Coventry. Someone at Jag has been reading Maslo. But you can pay £70k and still sit in front of a blanking plate on the steering wheel to remind you every day that you couldn't afford the one with the decent spec..
Drove an M5 recently; it would take much more expensive audio equipment to hide the origins of the 'high performance engine' sound. Also tried an i8; an incredible car, a technical triumph, a styling masterpiece, a dynamic marvel, but the sound generator can't reproduce a wide enough frequency spectrum to sound anything more than tiringly artificial. Sound is vital; when driving a fast car, all the senses must be stimulated. I know that with turbochargesr and exhaust aftertreatment it is difficult to maintain the aural quality of, say, an E46 M3 CSL (which used a resonating plastic lunch box thing to supplement the noise), but in my view something that sounds artificial makes the car less desirable. Do you want people to know you're a poser?

Something I find odd is how half of the posts are totally focused upon what other people will think of a cars noise. Seem utterly convinced that the key issue is how passers by perceive it and are convinced that this is the main factor for all buyers. Doesn't anyone buy a car because they like it as opposed to how they think other people will view them in it anymore?
I couldn't live with an electrically produced exhaust note - but that has nothing to do with what passers by might hear or think. It's just one step too far along the cheesey spectrum for me (and I'm not against a bit of cheese, this is just a bit too much for me)

I can understand the issue with these somewhat OTT synthesised exhausts and engine resonators tuned like a pipe organ - however each to their own - if you want a noisy Monday morning commute then fine.
If my old car started making pops and bangs on throttle lifts it'd just worry the webers were out of sync again...if my trusty Volvo made any noises at all I'd call the AA. However if some young chap blasts by on the bypass with an induction kit and a big exhaust blaring away who am I to begrudge the smile on his face?
Last point - synthesised sounds from car manufacturers just indicate that the marketing department, not the engineering department are in charge!!

You hear them coming 5 minutes before you see them and estimate they must be doing at least 80mph between junctions. 5 minutes later you see them rolling along at 10mph with the rest of the traffic. Porsche should really just issue owners with a large megaphone so they can shout the message they are actually wanting to communicate.
I have less of an issue with internal fake sound effects as they aren't forced upon the general public. I have even less issue if it can be turned off.

Some of these comments belong on mumsnet, not Pistonheads; hang your heads in shame. :-) If you search back 5-10 years, there are pages and pages of comments attributed to 'lack of exhaust sound', bemoaning the loss of the sports car sound through refinement. The only thing slightly artificial about the GTS exhaust are the pops and crackles on overurn, and you only really hear those in Sport Plus mode. To my ears, it's one of the best sounding exhausts fitted to any new car, regardless of price.
Oh, and there's no artificial sound generation in this car. It's all produced by the engine, either intake or exhaust by channelling the flow of intake and exhaust gas.

I think the split is those who prefer a true mechanical sound, as in a car that makes those noises because it has to. And those that could care less what is actually going on under the hood, have no technical know how and think that the noise is cool. Same camp who would rather have a Straight 6 oil burner over a V8 screamer because it has more torque.
