RE: Enough exhaust noise already: Tell Me I'm Wrong

Agree that it's gotten a bit contrived now. Had a Boxster S; it sounded absolutely incredible at high revs. As such, it didn't need the other theatrics. I ended up feeling like a wally driving it and preferred the quieter, but more 'authentic' sound of my 997.
Presumably that big problem is solved by not specifying the optional sports exhaust? Thus the 'authenticity' is maintained!mackie1 said:
Out of interest, how many £1000s do you have to spend to get all the buttons? Also it appears that the manual mode works the wrong way round which I'd not expect from Porsche!
Porsche Sports Exhaust is standard on a Boxster GTS, £1530 option on Boxster and Boxster S. The gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel make manual changes with the lever largely redundant so it's a bit of a moot point which way the lever operates. Interestingly its the "correct" way around on the 911 GT3.hondansx said:

My friend has a 997 GTS. It has the Sports and Sports Plus buttons too and shock-horror when Sports Plus is selected the car makes a racket and also makes fake, contrived noises. The humanity. Thus 997s need to be added to the list of ridiculous poseur cars for shouty "look at me" sorts too, because like everything else mentioned (except the TVRs which are mapped to do it all the time) it has a button to make it louder if you care to press it.
It's the people on this thread who lack integrity, not the cars. Nobody makes you press the loud button - so Dan - your article is ridiculous frankly. Selecting the loudest mode to video then use it as justification to say it's all too much is borderline moronic. The reason you have to press the button to make the loud noises is because the car is intended to be quieter most of the time. Where optional on most of these new cars lambasted by the PHelitists, the standard fit is the quiet exhaust and the buttons give you louder - so you're not going to be buying one that bangs its way down the High Street with its driver feeling embarrassed and outraged in the driver's seat.
If the exhaust noises are contrived, then so is this stupid article Dan. The whole "problem" being whined about is contrived because you created it in the first place by pressing the loud button.

I completely agree and have thought this for a while.
Two stand out examples of how, IMO, it's done wrong are the V8 Vantage and the F-Type; both sound quiet at low revs & throttle-opening and then go totally berserk above 3k rpm. My old MX-5 used to make a few pops and bangs when really hot and thrashed, perfect; amusing when on it, but it only used to really gurgle and harumph around town, not the full exhaust artillery.
The over-engineered noise, or the exact same pop on the overrun or gear change would just tire with me.
In summary, you're not wrong!

So cars which are loud all the time are embarrassing driving through town, according to the wisdom of this thread.
Cars which are quiet when driven around town but get loud when driven harder are over engineered according to you.
What you need is a Prius.
The V8 vantage has an OK motor (way more interesting and characterful than most) and the F-type has an insane engine ..... I don't think it 'wrong' that these cars make a sound to back up their engine - particularly if it's genuine combustion noise (can't get head around the others but I realize I'm being a bit boring about that).
Are these two worse than a C63 (which also sounds glorious to me)?

'For illustrative purposes' that vid was shot in Sport Plus, which puts the exhaust in Sport mode and does the over extravagant self blipping thing. And, again, to make the point I was being a bit binary with the throttle. On the way back there was actually a better demonstration on a road with speed bumps but the damned battery on the GoPro conked out.
It is a little more muted in standard mode but it still does a stupid little rumble of thunder when you come off the throttle.
I love the exhaust and induction noise on the Boxster - my specific gripe here is with the ridiculous overrun banging and popping. See also the DSG 'burp' on VW group cars, the '45 AMGs, Minis, Abarth 500s, etc...
But you're also more than welcome to tell me I'm talking out of my tailpipe!

+1 for the DSG "burp" the most ridiculous sound after the fake exhaust sound in the Golf RIt is a little more muted in standard mode but it still does a stupid little rumble of thunder when you come off the throttle.

I think the point is no one can tell you that you are wrong. What you love the sound of and others love the sound of will often be very different, no different to liking different eras or genres of music. Changing our personal likes and dislikes are seldom won in a debate. But you're also more than welcome to tell me I'm talking out of my tailpipe!
Every time i get in my golf R and fire it up, engage race, flick the DSG into sport and tear off down the road it just makes me sad. Thud upchanges and blip downchanges make me cry a bit. Just kidding - the whole ownership experience is obviously fking great. I notice no-one who actually owns one of these cars has anything to complain about.

Point slightly missed there... I have no problem with bypass valves to make the engine louder, when opened up, it's just the insane amount of noise that's normally associated with it. More noise = good; insane amount of noise = not good. So cars which are loud all the time are embarrassing driving through town, according to the wisdom of this thread.

In fairness, my current car is like a Prius in comparison to my old MX-5!
