These are normal noises, usually masked by silencers that are now diverted so it's louder at more opportune times.

I think the fuelling on lift/trailing throttles helps make it more/less noticeable though.

In the end this is what you get for changing throttle position so often when you could just drive at a constant throttle position in a higher gear.

Theyre not 'normal' noises though. That Porsche could quite happily operate as well without any exhaust popping and banging.

The focus I have just picked up has a slightly blowing exhaust.

It pops and overruns off power between 2-3k rpm. Found it hilarious when I first noticed, it now irritates me quite a bit, and shall be getting fixed at the weekend.

I noticed it yesterday...

In the same way, one of the women in the office has a cayenne GTS. It nice, for a 4x4. When it starts, it sounds like it has a straight through, and then goes quite after about 5 seconds. It is just "look at me" stuff isn't it. Pops, bangs, OTT exhaust on performance cars are great, but it should be a result of a hot exhaust/ aggressive engine map/ hard drive. I think some of these overrun burbles being built in now are only a step away from the "flamer" kits people used to put on corsa's..

  • ETA - The actual point.. In that I think it gets old, really quicklylaugh For clarity, I am not comparing my stbox focus to a Porsche.

I suspect reactions to this topic will be neatly separated into two camps:

Under the age of 35: Great! love all that poppin n' bangin
Over the age of 35: Urgh! no thanks, i like to move swiftly and silently like a geriatric ninja in slippers

(as a just past 40 something, i'm in the second of those camps....... ;-)
I'd revise that lower - I'm 30 and in the second camp.

Whilst not as bad as pmpung fake engine sound through the speakers, it is still fakery for instant gratification, rather than as a byproduct of a highly strung engine.

To all those saying "if you don't like it, don't buy the car" there aren't many options these days where there isn't some sort of fake engine noise.

My little Eunos developed a crack in the manifold on the way to a recent weekend hoon on the way to the Alps. It wasn't that loud, but it became unbearably annoying. I want to get it fixed and back to normal.

The best exhaust I have heard recently is the Aston V8, as a posted above wrote - quiet up to 400rpm, then it lets rip. I notice there's a tendency amongst Vantage owners to remove a fuse, so it's full on loud all the time. Why?

The worst exhaust noise I remember hearing on a car review, was some specialle Pagani. Every time the driver changed gear, BANG, a gunshot loud bang from the exhaust. That would drive me nuts. A deal breaker, even (if I had the £s).
Best bet on the Aston Martin V8 or V12 is to have a 3 way switch installed
Position 1 Permanently Silenced avoids upsetting the neighbours with young kids late at night
Position 2 AM settings so valves open at around 3500 RPM good for general driving
Position 3 Permanently open good for those fun drives, tunnels etc

As for those that say when you over 40 you want it quiet, come on the inner child still wants some pleasure at times.

No but there is a switch.

You're not wrong.

It's a contrivance. Created to amuse teenagers.

Next they'll rigging a Kia to play a V12 through the speakers and calling it enhanced driving pleasure.
You joke, but we're already there. The new Clio RS has selectable noises, including a simulated Clio V6 that get's pumped through the speakers to mask the 1.6 four pot.

The F-type v6 does a quite big blip of the throttle upon pressing the start button. Although it sounds nice I imagine it could get tiring eg. when starting early in the morning in a built up area.

I'm not delighted with the contrived/synthetic noises, however, the way mainstream combustion engine development is going, it is either that or near silence, and I know which I prefer.

Not wrong or right. It's personal preference, clearly as everyone as a different opinion.

The deciding factor? New car buyers, who will talk with their wallets, and the manufacturers will respond accordingly.

Personally i think the exhaust noise can make or break a car. But my definition/opinion of what is good or bad won't be the same as the next man.....and as I will probably never buy a new car also irrelevant.

Having a map that specifically makes an engine pop and bang is the most poxy and cringe worthy thing I've ever heard of. I like a car that is purposeful and happens to make these noises when driven utterly flat out on a track. My stylus kicks out flames and bangs every now and again if you're absolutely flooring on track but to make a car do it at 30mph through town or through a tunnel... uber bent.
My thoughts exactly.

I've been lucky enough to have the F type V6 first couple of weeks, I've got to say I think I would agree that early morning start up especially in a garage would really start upset neighbours after a while.
I love did most of the time, but then I was driving only for pleasure, I think if I was trying to drive away from a client's house it might get more than a little embarrassing. Surely that must surely be software, it's a shame they don't fit another switch to stop it doing this every time.

I had a Tubi Rumore exhaust on an e92 M3, it sounded like thunder but on a cold start up it was stupidly loud so I took it off in the end.

I also found you couldn't enjoy a quick blast of throttle/acceleration as that would grab everyone's attention round town and you just knew everyone was thinking "cock"

To me a low grumbly woofle is best, I prefer a C63 to a V8 M3 for instance, these cars that are forced sound flatulent rather than melodic. The sound should "hint" at the latent power, to be presented when required.

A Corvette makes a natural sound in this regard, as does a TVR.

Worst offending awards should go to the Renaults and the golf Gti where you can change the way the car sounds through the stereo to make it sound likes different cars. My answer.... buy a better car in the 1st place!

I've got an E93 M3 in the garage, I had the exhaust Mod done about a year ago. I've lived with it since then, but driving through town it was just too noisy. It's a shame because cross country with the roof down it sounded fantastic. You got to push it much harder with the standard exhaust on to sound as good.

On a separate note I've got the exhaust valve permanently open on my 360, I can't decide whether I like it or not. It now sounds like a V8 Ferrari should, but I loved it as you came out of the speed limit and dropped it down a gear, you could hear the valve open and all of a sudden got all of the noise, having the valve open made it a bit more dramatic.

Completely agree, if it is not mechanical and driven purposely by trickery what is the point? Fits in well on PH though I would say.

Poppping and banging on the SLR was due to a shiity timing and leaking collectors. Amusing that some drivers aspire to make more noise rather than a better power curve smile
