My business partner has a 918 - it's absolutely epic.

I joked that he only got it because he couldn't get a LaFerrari - but it looks incredible in person - and feels just as fast from the passenger seat.
Friend of mine has his 918 being delivered this month and he's really looking forward to it.

He's also getting his LaFerrari around June next year and he's quite excited about that too!

Quite a lucky chap and it adds some more metal to his quite stunning collection yes

The factvthat the 918 comes on one tyre until the winters are released along with the "track focused rubber " and the p1 comes on pirellis with the option of corsa r recommended " to, on and from track only" kind of proves my point .

To be clear the corsa r is much stickier than the 918 specific cup 2 , the cup 2 for the 918 has low rolling resistance and Eco credentials , that's why more track focused rubber is coming . In fact I have been told when I collect mine in December , in the bleak German winter my 918 will be fine on the cup 2 tyre . Compare that with the corsa r spec and usage recommendation .

Also the twr is a lot more relevant than you think , obviously a stickier tyre wears faster ...

This is what has been the oddity in my view.

The P1 is a road car for the track. It's been sold on fancy lowering suspension, aero and fancy tyres that allow it to do things on a track, but are irrelevant on the road for the most part.

I'm sure both are amazing and stuff, but the 918 does appear to have had a clearer brief and has ultimately made it a better car for the intended purpose.

The P1 just feels left chasing a niche that is kinda irrelevant.

I'm still excited to see a same-tyre road-suspension setting test between the P1 and 918 at some more roady track like Millbrook Alpine circuit... drivers preferably fresh to the track too, so a real "like for like" on-road challenge that considers them from an uber-road car hybrid perspective.

That's what I'm interested in more. You can fudge and fanny around with on-track times/performances all day and they become irrelevant, not that they are particularly relevant to begin with any way.

Too short a circuit? 918 weight will be telling.

Is there a time for them at Silverstone or any other F1 circuit?

Given they will not release the ring time for the P1 why would they for any other track as the same logic applies.

Hasn't Paul Bailey got all 3 - him driving the cars at Silverstone is as real world as you can get. wink

Worth noting that for the 918, due to the lack of a multispeed gearbox, the front Emachine will be operating significantly away from it's peak power speed (in terms of rpm) for the vast majority of the time! It uses a technique called "field weakening" to attempt to broaden the operating speed range, but the threat of permanent De-mag (thermally and electro-magnetically) limit what is possible, even with a highly salient motor architecture.

Assuming roughly a 2:1 capability for field weakening, that means peak power at the front wheels occurs only at roughly 80mph, and at all other speeds the front motor cannot deliver it's peak output.

For the P1, we were quite adamant that output of the Emachine must be referenced via a multispeed gearbox in order that it could be leveraged in the most effective manner, with the speed matching vs the ICE just being a matter of maximising the shape of the torque curve. (2:1 geared to crank, Emachine:ICE respectively)
What language is this silly
