Hi everyone, traded my C63 in for a 997 GT3 on Saturday and now I need an every day car for under 10k.

It needs to have a decent amount of space so will probably need to be a hatch back.

Economy not a problem. Needs to be reliable and can't be RWD as I live out in the sticks and need something which will work if we have snow.

Been considering Mk 5 golf GTI's, Audi A4 estates so far. Anyone got any more interesting suggestions?

p.s. it needs to be reliable!

Thanks,
Andrew

Golf R32? 4wd, gorgeous engine note? Should be able to pick up a mk5 with that. AFAIK ones on a 55 plate are a lot cheaper to tax than 06 on.

Toyota Celica VVTLi?

For 10k you could be looking at the R32 rather than the gti or a B6 Audi S4 Avant if you want a bit of class and large(ish) CC, then there's the Lancer Ralliart GS or the good old WRX hatch or hawkeye wagon if you like Turbo Jap rally types.

He'll need the spare £3k if the timing chains/tensioners need doing.

Very similar situation to you recently - I needed a work / everyday car to run alongside my 997 (only a lowly Gen-2 Carrera S in my case) and after a lot of trying various other options, I ended-up with a Mk5 GTi. For under 9 grand, I found an '08, warranted, main dealer car with only 40,000 miles on it from new.

£300's worth of remap and a service later, plus the precautionary replacement of a few parts known to cause issues (diverter valve, crankcase vent valve, boost pipe seals and fuel pump cam follower) and the Golf's a genuinely enjoyable little car to drive. The Mk5 handles pretty well anyway and the remap's made quite a difference to the otherwise so-so performance. It now has enough torque to break traction in 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the wet. Hilarious, if a little unruly!

Otherwise the car's roomy enough to carry 5 people or plenty of boxes / bits of other cars - the rebuilt front bumper for my 635CSi went in fine - whilst being relatively cheap to run. Tyres aren't that expensive (I've left the car on 17s) and 30mpg in mixed driving is perfectly possible (the remap improved fuel economy noticeably as well as performance).

Overall a very good all-rounder for sensible money.

Thanks for the reply, my initial gut feeling as that something like a golf is going to be the best bet.

Depending on how much space you need, have you considered an Octavia vRS?

Golf was my first thought but if you are thinking of something more interesting then how about and Alfa 147 GTA or Mazda 3 MPS?

Perfect!

(seriously OP, if you haven't tried one, I suggest you do. They're seriously good, if you can get over the looks - black is best)

Local VW dealership had an 08 plate Golf GTi with leather and 43k miles in which I drove this morning and loved it.

Great pairing, as an only car a MkV GTi is a tad boring but in your case, it's pretty much spot on, hope you enjoy them both biggrin
