S2 Elise 111S with a Hayward & Scott exhaust system and straight through pipe ... Mine does a loud bang on upshifts above 4K RPM, pops and bangs like crazy on overrun above 4K RPM and pops/burbles when below 2K RPM. It's also been known to spit some small blue flames too! smile

Question for you?

Why does the S54 not pop and bang? I managed only once on mine after 20 miles of alpine passes at special stage speed..... Standard exhaust btw.

My 2014 Lotus Elise S pops and bangs on overrun. It has the TRD airbox and Stage 3 exhaust though.
My 111R with TRD and 2bular does too, though not all the time.

The R56 certainly did. Especially so with the JCW exhaust! Pretty sure the F56 does, too.
R56 S did a lot from standard then they changed the Map on them. I'm guessing so the JCW popped more. My R56 GP loved to pop and bang at any chance !

F56 do as well even the coopers now and again.

To be fair you can get R50 Ones and Coopers to pop with some hard driving wink
Our R56 Clubman S did all the time - more so when you selected Sport mode.
Sport mode changes the map to increase pops n bangs.

My r53 GP with a Janspeed mani and decat would pop bang and flame on over run lol

I think it's acceptable for cars to cackle and pop if they've been redlined but when you see one popping when at 4k it's a bit sad. Decatted rx-8s make mental ones if redlined with 2 foot flames.

I heard some banging in a car park a while back but couldn't see what car was causing it, must have been cringe worthy for them as I couldn't hear any revving or clutch slipping so I assume they weren't doing it on purpose.

I wonder if you could get a section 59 for inadvertently causing a nuisance?

I bought a 1985 VW Polo with the 1-litre engine from an auction which did the crackle & pop thing. It was probably broken.

Why? If I'm driving at revs over 4K, then I'm probably having fun! If I'm driving around town or commuting, I'll normally stay under 4K ... Mine burbles at lower RPM, but if it popped all the time, I think it would get quite annoying!

You need to visit Hayward and Scott! biggrin Here's a H&S custom GT exhaust on a Z4M:

Yep my R56 GP does it, only with the sport button pressed however (that'll be every drive then!)

This one is now mine biggrin this was taken just before I bought it.

I confirm I swapped back to straight through cans (as they are in the video) as soon as possible!

My Vantage V8VS does it with the exhaust valves open, luckily I can shut them round town so it doesn't draw too much attention (unless I feel otherwise wink ).
I love the sound and more often than not the "giggle" button is on.
I can see how it winds up (or even scares) pedestrians, it does also create the false impression you are flying along frown

Clio 172 will do it, at least with the K-Tec Stealth exhaust and standard cat (and standard map) and if you give it a good spanking.
There's a sickeningly popular map that makes them do it all the time but that's just sad.
Deliberately mapped as standard on so many cars these days.
If it's not natural then don't bother smash

Pretty sure the N52 engines too as well, I can hear various crackles and pops on the overrun on my 125i. Not especially loud, just a perfect accompaniment to the other music it produces smile

It was one of my favourite features on my Racing Puma, especially through a stainless steel exhaust - absolutely superb.

My R56 Cooper S had a nice (if slightly artificial sounding) exhaust note. It could be coerced into some quite loud pops/bangs occasionally, although it never sounded as great as the Puma.

The last three cars I've had (Clio 182, MX-5 and Civic Type R) have all sounded like hairdryers in comparison.
