Having just sold the Boxster S and contemplating selling the S2k I have a real itch for a Discovery V8. Nothing expensive, say £3-4k on an MY02, 03 or 04. May even consider older if cheaper.

Should I?

Shouldn't I?

MPG isn't a concern. Having a tow bar is and I'd like it to be an auto (another itch I have). Looking at specs the GS with leather etc appeals.

Thing is, there seems to be some terrible examples out there or am I missing the point?

They are pretty unreliable from my experience if not looked after properly, The biggest problem is finding a decent one, TD5s are 10 a penny but the V8's far more rare. The Active anti-rollbar system is good for cornering but a pain in the arse if it goes wrong.

I ran a Series II V8 top spec ES Premium for a while and absolutely loved it, went reasonably well, was a great motorway cruiser and it sounded so much better than the TD5. I've owned a 200 Tdi, 300 Tdi, 3.9 V8i, TD5 and 4.0 V8 Discovery and the 4.0 V8 was definitely the best one I had.

I picked up a Borla catback for it too, and it made a much better noise with that!

I accidentally purchased a V8 Discovery on eBay last night. I can't see any negatives bar 9-12mpg around town, 19 on a run. Meh, its only fuel at the end of the day, it won't do huge miles!

The only problem I ever had was a transmission cooler hose separate from the connector.

As above, I would try to find one with the ACE system. The pipe corrode and are a PITA to replace. the rear air suspension can also be problematic but replacing burst airbags is cheap and easy and 2nd hand compressors can be picked up quite cheep too.
Mine was a TD5 and I had trouble with the rear diff, steering box, starter motor, leaky sunroof and a snapped front spring.
I wouldnt buy another one.

ACE and air suspension bits are easily fixed these days - lots of pattern parts available and really great guides on the net if you're handy yourself.

Otherwise there are plenty of conversion kits out there that remove both systems if you fancy.

I currently run a 2001 TD5 manual in ES spec. I will be swapping it for another one with a V8 and an auto box in the near future.

Take from that what you will.

By chance, I was chatting last night with a neighbour who has a TDV8. I remarked that he'd had it for ages. He said, inter alia, that he didn't feel the need to change it because it does everything he needs and never lets him down.
