Congestion charge for Manchester?
Discussion
I've been waiting for this to happen since the failure of the travel tax scam in Manchester through democratic means.
I'm deeply suspicious that they get a mayor in place and they can just implement a congestion charge with no referendum.

It doesn't mention a congestion charge but that will be very high on the list of tinpot schemes.
I expect the same will happen in every big city in the UK very swiftly if this is the case.

£450m tram extension to Trafford Park. What the fk- its costing almost `1/2 billion just to go there? Most people drive, catches buses etc. I didn't see it as a problem. Wow. £450m.
That is chump change compared to the Edinburgh Tram (non-plural/singular!) line. Try £1bn once the interest is taken into account.Might be being stupid, but I don't see any reference to the congestion charge?

We have the second phase of tram works in progress new,I've not met anyone in favour of this crap scheme yet.
Also the Workplace Parking Levy (WPL), to help pay for this white elephant idea the commuter pays nearly £400 a year for the privilege of parking in a company provided car park.
Nottingham was the first city to trial the WPL.

Don't forget half of that will be profit - split between whoever signed off the project and whoever builds it.gus607 said:

I hated this when I worked in notts, I could see it would make sense for those driving into the actual city centre, but I worked on the outskirts and wouldn't have benefitted at all from the tram. Just extorting drivers as usual to pay for corporate back handers - the tram is privatised now not even run or owned by the council We have the second phase of tram works in progress new,I've not met anyone in favour of this crap scheme yet.

Thankfully I work in derby now where parking on private company land is free

In all seriousness they do need a route out to trafford park, it is one major area serviced by the tram (sale sharks, trafford centre).I'm deeply suspicious that they get a mayor in place and they can just implement a congestion charge with no referendum.

The current city centre scheme is the introduction of a second route through the town centre, currently there is only one route, which if there is a problem the entire network screams to a halt impacting all sides.
The introduction of a oyster card solution would be fantastic, so much more simple to get onto the trains and buses, however, it would be interesting for "ticket checks", not sure how they would achieve that.
