"Do I need my insurance certificate to tax my car?

No, in most cases you can now tax your vehicle online, or by phone, provided that you are the registered keeper and your name, address and any changes you have made to your vehicle have been updated on DVLA/DVLANI records."

ETA;

"Is it true that it’s no longer necessary to bring a Certificate of Motor Insurance to the Post Office when renewing Car Tax?

You should bring whatever associated documents DVLA specify on your reminder. In terms of insurance, customers in England, Scotland and Wales do not need to present Insurance Certificates. Customers in Northern Ireland are still required to produce a valid Insurance Certificate when taxing a vehicle."

Stand by for the continuous insurance enforcement fine. If it's taxed, it must be insured.

Great little money-making scheme.

Having been screwed over by a twunt with no insurance I have no problem with that and as I'm over 35 my insurance is less than my tax anyway.

Alternatively, the treasury will happily take your money for the VED then send a fine for no insurance...
