Sold my '88 Austin Cooper today and very sorry to see her go - but - which boring hatchback to replace it with?

Two options (because I need a car by Monday)

1) VW Golf 1.6 16v, 5dr. 2002, 56000, one owner form new (yes honestly) FSH £1800
OR
2) Peugeot 206 2.0 GTi, 3Dr, 2003, 59000, two owners, £1200

No brainer - get the VW right ?

(after many years of driving classic Jags and Minis I'm slightly unsure of how it works with more modern second hand cars)

Just need a bit of reassurance from guys that I'm thinking in the right direction.

Best wishes
Monty

Depends on condition. That simple.

The Golf does seem better but as above depends on the condition.

IMO a one owner car is a big plus.

Both in good nick - I'm just working on the assumption that a low mileage VW will outlast a low mileage Peugeot
in terms of repairs / build quality etc

Am I wrong ?

Build quality does get a negative response around here for a 206.

One owner from new, which means he could have had a year old GTi, but didn't because he's silly enough to buy a brand new car. Golfman, therefore, doesn't like motoring. If he doesn't like it, he doesn't care about it. He got the new car because it was convenient and meant he had to do absolutely no thinking. Car came with three years free servicing, no MOT needed, tyres etc all thrown in. Once that stopped, did he bother with servicing it and looking after it properly? Possibly, possibly not. After all, he doesn't like cars, he doesn't know anything about them, they're white goods.

Peugeot man, on the other hand, went out and bought the best of the breed. He did this because like cars. Because he likes cars, he did two things, he looked after it properly, because that's his hobby and he joined a forum. Joining the forum is important because not only did he pick up tips about preventative measures to be taken on that particular car, but he also used the forum to sell his carefully looked after car to a fellow enthusiast, who did likewise.

It's almost certainly not true, but there's a certain beauty to the logic.

Simon.

The Golf looks good (until the gearbox grenades itself).

Unless Golfman is my dad!

In which case, although he has no interest he has maintained the Golf (a Primera, actually) to the peak of mechanical condition, whereas Golfman Jr (me, "The Wrecker" according to Golfman Sr) will have driven "enthusiastically" everywhere, missed service intervals and left dead stuff under the seats, despite being a member of lots of forums and being surprisingly boring to sit next to at dinner parties...

Mini

Can I ask why you sold it?

Buying any car under pressure of deadline isn't ideal. Personally I'd take a little longer and find the right car. Maybe a moern Mini type thing, like a 106 Rallye or even a 205 GTi?

As long as they're both in decent nick with a reasonable service history I'd go for the Peugeot.

Faster, looks quite good, is probably better equipped and is 2/3rds of the price. Should it turn out to be a total dog you'll have wasted less money.

This. Or the Pug. Personally I'd rather poke pins in my eyes than live with the Golf.

You're a PH member...

You've just sold an original Mini...

You won't like either of those cars.

Of the two, I'd go with the Peugeot, as it'll have more pizazz than a Mk4 Golf.

I have a 1.9 PD 130 Bora, which is dull. I can't imagine how dull a 1.6 will be

If you have adult-size feet, you'll find the 206 difficult to drive.

I'd go Peugeot. It'll be cheaper, more fun and no less reliable (the MkIV Golf really wasn't that good).
