I got a cheer of a couple of schoolkids, came out of a damp junction and gave it some, nice and tidy but nothing special, hadn't notice the two kids sat on a wall waiting for a bus, they obviously appreciated me providing entertainment whilst they had a boring wait for a bus biggrin
This is just the issue. You hadn't noticed the school kids. Imagine drifting over a school kid. Not good.

Depends on the conditions.

I once followed an e34 M5 through London at about 2am. It had been raining, but recently stopped.
He was provoking nice little controlled dab of oppo slides on the roundabouts and I thought it looked like much fun.

If there is traffic around though, then no, not really. You'd look like a knob.

Also for me it's a no-no in the dry - just too much energy / speed required to unstick most cars safely.
And the noise is pretty anti-social. Save it for the track.

I drive mine on 888's in the wet and the rear only steps out when I want it to. I don't do it on public roads though, unless they're deserted.

Drifting shouldn't be done on public roads.

Maybe the driver goes out late at night on his own when there's no one around and drifts around on public roads because he enjoys the feel of it. Not to brag or wonder what anyone else thinks of him, but because it makes him happy.
The fact the OP is posting this on an internet forum proves he does care what other people think of him.

If a driver drifts on an empty public road and no-one is there to witness, did it really happen?

Better do it in Sainsbury's instead!
You'll be in just as much trouble if the plod spots you - you know that right?

If its dry, being a plonker. If its wet, benefit of the doubt.

It depends what I'm in when I see you.

In my work van? I'd wonder how long it'll take for you to get nicked/crash.

In my car? I'd probably join in biggrin.

But seriously, if you're going to drive 'enthusiastically' you've got to be careful especially here in London where even obscure back end roads have full CCTV coverage and every square KM is inhabited by someone. You've got to pick your time and place very carefully, and to be honest if your time and place is somewhere people can see you and your time is bright enough for you to analyze their reaction you're probably not picking either very well.

This. Then again I'm a 22 year old serial petrol-6 BMW owner so tend to appreciate this sort of stuff.

Would I go sideways when I thought anyone was looking? Probably wouldn't be worth the potential hassle.

Most people would think you're a tt.

If it was unintentional I'd probably think you had poor tyres.

If it was intentional I'd probably think it was cool.
How would you know if it was or wasnt intentional though?

I am all for the empty car park and some cones option which is ideal the only thing is that is technically illegal albeit much safer option
Where as doing it on a public road with other people about is legal ??
How many motoring journos do u see going sideways on public roads ? Lots just pick up any car magazine.
Oh thats quite ok then, you can use that excuse when you run out of talent and bin it biggrin

What would I think? I'd think you were some Jeremy Kyle Show knuckle dragger who has just been told their 45 stone gf has been cheating on him and is "gutted".

Not condoning excesses on the public roads but I remember following the RAC Rally years ago when they had night stages and the Group B cars were at their zenith. It was early in the morning, sun coming up, a bit cold with those wet, greasy roads that you always get at that time of year. We were sat parked up in a Mk2 Escort just after a big wide roundabout somewhere in the Lakes waiting to rendezvous with a friend in his Sunbeam who'd had the luxury of an overnight B&B. There were little dribs and drabs of rally traffic in a hurry to the next stage........Mk1 Escort, Mk2 Escort, Fiat 131.....Manta....Capri.....ooh new Golf Gti, Mk1 Escort, XR3i.... Gp4 Escort replica.......baa arp, braap, braap....... and he's sideways into, through...and out the island........with a big dab of oppo and a smile from all the occupants on the way past. That seemed to start a chain reaction as the poky sounding HS Chevette replica tried the same, followed by a Sunbeam Ti, Escort Mk1, sparkly new E21 BMW, old Cortina, another Fiat Mirafiorii .......all adept at varying degrees. It made us smile that morning

Of course, it's very bad, not for the roads etc. and would result in much issuing of tickets etc if the police saw.

I think the driver:

A - May need to rethink his driving style as to not lose control, or buy shoes not made of lead.

B.1 - May be a drift wannabe using public roads to practice on and/or show off.
B.2 - Doesn't realise nobody cares/ thinks he is "cool".

The amount of idiots I see close to where I live doing this around a certain roundabout either in clapped out 200sx or various uninspiring BMW models is laughable. The result is usually either a variety of bumper fragments at the side of the road, or the "driver" pulling into the nearby drive-thru to tell all his little friends about his achievements.

Rant rant rant
Rage rage rage

Etc smile

I'm guessing you've done a bit of this then? If so, fair enough. If you gain enjoyment from it and you are not intentionally trying to showboat infront of anyone for "Respec' bruv" then crack on, just not anywhere near me thanks (as you state above, and looking at your profile pic, I doubt you would do this where there is any risk of injuring/ damaging anything but yourself or your property) smile
... If I had gone to an event to watch cars drift about then It would be great, I've got nothing against things going sideways at all!

The question asked was "what do people think etc" and this is exactly what I would think if I SAW this on a public road, no matter what type of car.
It's the same thing as people who have binary throttle control (and in 1st!!!) between speedbumps, slamming the brakes on at the last minute, you could be in a brand new Lambo etc, but you'd still look like a complete cock.

AND WHILE WE'RE AT IT, FOGLIGHTS! FOGLIGHTS AND SIDELIGHTS COMBINED!
Think of the children!!! (I joke, I joke, it's been done to death)

On any road round here, I'd probably think 'bit of a tool' and give them a wide berth. Not the sort of thing that's a particularly good idea on most roads

Jeez...it's like the hand-wringer's monthly meeting at the church hall in here. tongue out

I don't have a problem with low-speed oversteer on quiet roads; obviously doing it in town centres, residential areas etc. is inappropriate but it does seem that PH is becoming almost as full of killjoys as the general population.

If I saw something like the OP described on a quiet road, and as long as they weren't going crazy or showing off to a bunch of chavs, I'd probably think "Good for you; enjoy it!"
