Ignore comments about it not being powerful. Compared to a 1.2 Corsa it will be a bloody rocketship quite frankly, and it drives very well. smile

Regarding the ST, get a quote, if you can afford one then obviously it's an even better drive than the Zetec-S, couldn't comment on how thirsty they are as never ran one for long though.

Worth getting a quote on a Seat Ibiza Cupra, they were certainly a lot cheaper to insure than a Golf GTI which it shares it's engine/running gear.

I drive an ST at the moment, and while its got some guts, it's not the quickest thing on the road, although the handling is brilliant. I can honestly say driving it around some nice B-roads is some of the best fun I've had!

I get around 34MPG on mine driving normally, driving like a granny gives around 37 or 38MPG, so not really worth driving carefully IMHO. Costs me around £42 a tank to fill up.

Insurance is around £400 a year, I'm 24 and got 4 years no claims, so might be a bit more expensive for you, but certainly worth looking into.

Parts are generally cheap, apart from the alloy centre caps which cost around £60 to replace after some scrote nicked them. Maybe not that expensive to some, but certainly annoying!

i have a mk6 Zetec S TDCI.

It's a nice motor, the handling is brilliant and it feels well put together. The diesel engines are absolute rubbish but if you're going for the petrol then you have basically no worries apart from they like to eat coil packs and thermostat housings.

I had a mk5 Fiesta ZS, go kart handling, horrid back ache on long motorways, never went wrong, did 7,000 miles in a few short months and then sailed through it's MOT. All the kids like it and therefore crash them quite alot. The Mk6 had better roadholding from what I saw when trying (and failing) to keep up, (I wanted to stay on the road).

Both of them won't do your "traffic light getaways" because they are only 1.6's, you may be able to beat anything upto the limit when they driver isn't paying attention to the lights though. wink

Here is one of the better pictures of mine;

I own a mk6 petrol zetec s, its a great car however the engine lets it down, keeps up with most cars but not quick, needs to to be turbo charged or have variable valve timing to give it that extra go which it needs. Had a loan of a mk7 zetec s tdci for a week, doesent feel as sharp as mine, diesel power in this car feels wrong, pulls well but runs out of revs instantly although it is a lot better on a long run fuel wise. A zetec s is pretty much an insurance friendly ST

I've always had a soft spot for these growing up, blue with those multispoke alloys look brilliant, even now i still like them.

As for the speed, im sure it will be fast enough but it will be more about the handling with these cars as they wont weigh much.

Puma. Engine is a gem, apart from rot they seem to be unbreakable. We have a track-prepped Puma which with a 4-1 manifold, stainless exhaust and no interior (so yes, cheating a bit) can just about keep with a standard Clio 172/182 on the straights.

Shocks and springs will be tired (as are ours), so the handling could be described as very direct but also quite soft at the limit.

You can get a good runner for £500. Such bargains.
