RE: Mazda Eunos Roadster: PH Fleet
Discussion
I keep thinking about selling my mint NB as it just sits in its Airchamber and gets the occasional run and I really, really do have too many cars now after my latest unexpected ebay win.
Then I go for a drive and change my mind. Again. There's something about them that gets under your skin.

Damn you Dan!
I've just about talked myself into selling my little 5 due to lack of use (same as yours but with a few massive PH smiley stickers) and this article comes along and makes me doubt my decision :-/
Will have to rethink now.
My wife mentioned selling "her" MX5 the other week. I told her I have 1st refusal, and I'll pay her the current value (which is half what she got me to pay for it when she told me it would hold it's value). We are keeping it. Speed wise, probably about even. The '5 has a far superior driving position, but the Puma the better engine.
I'd probably go with the Puma (purely as I've owned a standard and a racing one), but the '5 still good fun - it just takes a while to gel with it, whereas the Puma is fun from the word go.
Yeah, they're very similar straight line performance, but the MX5 leaves the Puma as soon as it gets to b roads an nice twisty corners. My mate had a Puma, its a good chassis, the engine isn't anything to get excited about and ultimately its FWD. Theres no way I'd choose a Puma over an mx5.
said mate now has an mx5
"performance not measured in quantity but how appropriate it is for the roads and conditions. I can confidently say I drove that car literally as fast as it would go for a significant proportion of that journey and yet remained within sensible sight of the posted limit. I made an awful lot of noise. I changed gear probably far more than was strictly necessary. I hammed up unnecessary double-declutched downshifts at every opportunity. Did a couple of little skids. And just had an absolute whale of a time."
I completely agree, finally got one in Jan this year for £850. Makes me smile every time I drive it. One of my mates , who currently has a radical, a Porsche 911 and a BMW 3 series , has just bought one more fun more often. cheap to buy, run and maintain.
also MX5 heaven are doing a deal on replacement rear panels at the mo, £170 for that pair delivered IIRC.

I just wish they were a little bigger.
I have fond memories of MX5's, as I worked for Mazda UK at their launch and spent many happy hours behind the wheel of the first BBR turbo.
In recent years we've had 4 and only sold the last 1.8 due to a lack of space. I wouldn't be surprised if we got another some day soon.

I love my R Ltd NA, I've been thinking about changing it for about 3 years now!
I've mentally 'decided' to change it for a e46 M3, Boxster S, Cayman, Caterham and most recently a Z3m over the years, but every time it never happens...
I really want a Caterham, but can't put up with flappy doors, leaky roofs, the missus would HATE it, the cost of a decent one.
Boxster / Cayman - running costs & engine issues put me off.
M3 / z3m, very tempting, but how quick can you really go on the road anyway. I'd inevitably get sucked into spending loads upgrading it to make it even faster no doubt.
I totally agree with the balance of grip / power being just about perfect for 'spirited' road driving. Definitely better on a set of matched 175 14" mid range tyres with a suitable loud exhaust natch.
Mine did one of those fantastic rifle crack upshift pops the other night, hadn't had one for a while - fan bloody tastic!

Have you driven elise, exige, sc'd vx 220, turbo vx220? Perfect balance for a fun car for me and different levels of practicality within ranges.I've mentally 'decided' to change it for a e46 M3, Boxster S, Cayman, Caterham and most recently a Z3m over the years, but every time it never happens...

I'm in the process of restoring my mk1, a COMPLETE service has been done. Now in the slow process of replacing all ball joints, linkages, bushes, suspension arms. Restoration of the Nardi wooden steering wheel, hand brake, gear knob and the the tan leather seats. It's going to cost a fortune but should be spectacular at the end!
