First I've owned/kept. I've bought and sold 3 others previously, but was never in a position to keep those for myself. They were also stock cars and in the case of Chris' car, needed a full restoration.

Great read and what a fantastic motor....

Thanks also for your technical help via the PH BMW forum when we were greeting our E24 back on the road, the citric acid in the radiator finally cured it's overheating issues.

When I think of E30's this this comes to mind. As well as the obligatory rally and DTM

Question. Did the DTM and rally cars have vastly different tuning. Always loved the crazy intake noise on the track cars.

Awesome cars! As you can see by my user name, I love them and had 2, the last one stripped out with carbon intake, schrick cams etc.

Now have a R32GTR, so similar racing heritage. Wish I could afford both!

I love that you love that car that much, and that you drive it properly too, bloody porsche owners banging on about bore scoring and investing in the right car hire me rigid, get them out there, and give them what for! My old E36 is nothing compared to your car, but I've got the same passion for it, so know exactly what you mean, good man!!!

Were you by any chance going along the A312 by Hayes recently coming off at the Southall/Hayes junction? I saw a red E30 there which looked suspiciously like this one. I was in a white GT86.

It made a brilliant noise too.

Ha, yes! smile I spotted your GT86 too!

The E30 touring is a customers car at Avers Racing. It has an S50/3.0 conversion. The owner of Avers also runs an E30 M3, which till recently had an E39 M5 V8 fitted.

These are at home.

This is my partners sons 318is. I got it last year and it's been restored to this condition, and he uses it every day. As a cheaper alternative, I think the 318is is a cracking car. I used to use the same engine in my e21 track car.

Please excuse the gratuitous photos.

Hello there, now thats a man who loves his BMW's, nice cars you have there (all of em), but i concur with the e30 m3 observations, first one i drove, felt slow coming from a 325i at the time 1995, i went home disappointed, but 3 years later and a good drive and still have my car till today. They need to be driven properly and then they really hustle, something that probably meant some did not realise... Wish you many more pleasurable miles.

To all you M3 addicts - more M3 for your 'bong'!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKnUWOkct9c

Not sure but I'd guess more Patrick Snijers in the Bastos car, Marc Duez in the Fina-sponsored version and perhaps Bernard Beguin in the Rothmans-liveried example but possibly all prepared by Prodrive?

Oh, and see if you can stick with Irish legend Billy Coleman driving an M3 on the 1987 Circuit of Ireland International with pace notes read by Ronan Morgan:

Shame about the music overlay but there's enough of the M3 snarl and bark:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN1Jp6d3QkA

It starts to become mesmerising towards the end and I keep waiting for the 'off' but, of course, that doesn't happen. A supremely-talented driver who could have made it to the very top had farming not been his first love and in his blood - and there's nothing wrong with that.

They are great cars but not that quick acceleration wise but they carry speed well through the bends. I owned six from 1999 to 2002 and the last one I sold was a mint 1991 black for 6000 grand... Basically the arse had fallen out of the market, to many crap cars about ... Wish I'd kept that one.
I loved the alloy wishbones and the way the gearbox hung on rails so you could swap out a box super quick....
