I have an s reg avant ming blue with black leather and blue nogaro alcantara interior i have had it for 18months and is my daily driver .
Did you buy it in Newbury by chance?MrTree said:
Ive always fancied a saloon and with a bit of a tweak and a remap you dont really need to change much else to achieve 300+ bhp.
a mechanic friend of mine has one and has owned it for the past 6 years and has no desire to get rid, he bought it for an absolute steal and runs it as his daily and maintains it religously but as far as im aware it has been a very reliable car and hasnt cost him much if anything went wrong (not includin labour as he is a mechanic) his is a nagaro blue but he put the bigger RS6 wheels on his and it looks mint.
i would buy one but you still have to pay strong money for a decent one or be very lucky.
i also think that with a 2.7 v6 Biturbo lump it should have come with more power from the factory as you see puny 2.0 turbo lumps with the same power.
What puny 2.0 turbo lumps came with 265bhp?a mechanic friend of mine has one and has owned it for the past 6 years and has no desire to get rid, he bought it for an absolute steal and runs it as his daily and maintains it religously but as far as im aware it has been a very reliable car and hasnt cost him much if anything went wrong (not includin labour as he is a mechanic) his is a nagaro blue but he put the bigger RS6 wheels on his and it looks mint.

I don't know why one doctor owner implies it's been looked after, I just see a very busy person, lots of short journeys, many in the middle of the night to dodgy built up areas, having to park all over the place and not really having much time to do anything car maintenance wise because they're too busy doing 72 hour weeks.
To be fair my snotter Golf was a one-owner doctor, and it was absolutely immaculately maintained because they need it to be reliable. There were receipts for everything down to bulbs for 13 years.joe1145 said:
8P Audi S3 came with 265, 2 litre turbo
Impreza WRX STI, last 2 litres had something around that power figure
There is a big difference than just headline bhp figure.Impreza WRX STI, last 2 litres had something around that power figure
Having been regularly in a friends S4, with stage 1 remap to about 325bhp with I think a sensible exhaust, it was the huge torque from low down in every gear that i remember. That had a few handling mods, think uprated arb's, minimal though, and four up he managed to just about reel in a German registered R8 V10 on a lap of the ring...the brakes had gone by about 3/4 of the way around the lap!

a cheaper alternative is the 1.8t quattro. This is torsen quattro not the pussy footed haldex in modern cars, so pretty good at making it faster. Stick a bex turbo off the b6 in and and a remap and you have a have a 250 bhp car and a few mods, with less running costs. i love the s4 b5 but they are becoming money pits.

(admittedly just a year later the TT had 225PS from the 1.8T)
Since I'm in love with fast estates i thought id put something a little left centre same ethos 4wd and reasonably fast reliable with practicality and comfort to boot. This is my holiday car great for touring where there are no gatsos and frequent speed checks. Toyota Caldina GTT 2.0 3SGTE 260bhp standard from factory

Four grand for the turbos ? are they fairly diy-able or a nigthmare job, K04 turbos arent all that expensive at like £500 each ? does it need setting up on a rolling road afterwards ?
It's an engine out job I believe, if you have to pay someone it's not cheap.Yes It's engine out due to the location of the turbos, even so it is not three grands worth of labour unless you are talking main dealer perhaps.
I asked the question back before buying mine (i like to go in eyes open) £1500-£1700 all in should the "worst" ever happen.
As Said before, much the same sort of money as a clutch and DMF job on a modern diesel.
It's no big deal at all really, don't let the internet scaremongers put you off, buy on condition and know what you are looking at and go for a facelift model.
These are great cars.
Mike Duff, good piece btw, I never expected to see a positive article about an Audi on Pistonheads.

owned a fairy heavily tuned one for a few years ludicrously fast from no revs and in any gear beautifully put together cabin still doesn't feel that dated, they lunch suspension arms quite regularly, std brakes arent up to it rs4 brakes much more suitable, be ready for a 4k bill when a turbo fails, look for one thats had the k04 turbos done already, and the face lift car is a much nicer thing and had alot of the pre facelift common issues resolved

Is that the same one that ended up in the gravel at the ring a few years back?! Every car you own lunches suspension components Rotta and occasionally gearboxes hahaRotta

Yes, nobody hates everything Audi has done, too big, too many good cars, too much history, I think its what they stand for now to certain people, so, there are a set of rules to Audi aoppreciation, thus,
As long as the Audi is an S/RS/Interesting/5 Cylinder model/Petrol/older than ten years or an UR quattro then its ok, also it needs to not be white, a Q7 or other SUV, S-Line, Leased, diesel and it must not have DRL's. Certain old curios like the V8 and 200 quattro to prompt mild enthusiasm.
Certain exceptions can be made for R8's (V10, grudgingly V8 but remember you will get picked on by the year 9's in their Golf R's), Newer S/RS models, anything "Bargetastic" (A8, remember to mention Ronin)oh and A5's as I do have a weird thing for them.
TT's, the jury is out, we just aren't sure, we sort of like the shape but we arent quite sure if they are butch enough, TTRS owners must remember to post VBox figures at all times and get into arguments with GTR owners.

It's not. Genuine K04s aren't (or weren't!) £500 each. Closer to £1k each from memory. Part of me thinks it was even more than that.Yes It's engine out due to the location of the turbos, even so it is not three grands worth of labour unless you are talking main dealer perhaps.
By the time you haul the engine out, change the belts and gaskets you pull off etc, you're still staring at £2.5k of parts bill.
Then there's mapping.
Cheap K04s have failed many a folk, when mine was being done there was someone there who couldn't understand why his boost was all over the place. One look at the play in the compressor wheel and the state of some of the casting and it was obvious why...
