Boring, BORING, BORING!
Shed can be anything, but never boring, please.
What do you suggest?Shed can be anything, but never boring, please.

Any BL cack, wobbly French Saloons, American stuff that got 300BHP horny, wonky kitcars, unloved Japanese big saloons, old Volvos, rotten Discoverys, undervalued classics, rapey motorhomes, tatty Fiats, overlooked Opels, early Skodas, 4-pot Porsches, things with big engines, bad engines, stuff with colour, character and a whiff of insanity about it. I'm not saying I want to buy these things, nor particularly like them, but they make for considerably more interesting reading than a bloody boring E46 (ex-owner here, they're BORING!).

I was trying to work out the value of my 130i yesterday because I am considering freeing up some cash to buy a house... £7500 seems to be the going rate for an 80k mile 130i. Sure, this 320i is not as powerful and doesn't have quite as many toys, but is the 130i £6500 more of a car? I'm thinking maybe not...
- stuff* Personally I wouldn't want to go back to a 4 cylinder right now, the 6 is just so sweet
I had an E46 320d - I loved it, but it had a but load of work done under warranty (like, 6k worth, having paid 10k from a main dealer for a 4 year old car). All of which went on known issues.
Still love the 46 shape though. One day I'll have a mint Laguna Seca Blue M3 in the stable. One day.

A strange couple of comments on here from people saying "It looks like a new BMW " or " put a private plate on and people will think its new " The e46 looks nothing like a new 3 series , or the 3 series before that or the E90/91/92 version from 2005 on , okay for a grand but interior very dated now
I thought this. Even my mum would spot this as being an old car, they look every bit of their 10 - 15 year age.I still really like the E46, i think it's a good looking car, not over the top styled but quite handsome.
When i had mine though i didn't find it that great to drive, it was my first BMW and had always heard of the "ultimate driving machine" marketing so maybe i had too high expectations

Had my 2001 325Ci for 4 years. It is now on 134k and feels very tight.
In that time I've only ever replaced 1 brake caliper. Absolutely amazing reliable fun car to own.
The big six exhaust note and character is a joy to own. It loves to be thrown around - GoodYear Eagle F1's are the tyre to have.
The only thing I don't like about it is the rusty front arches. I have new genuine BMW replacements at £275 per pair plus paint that I have painted 2 part epoxy paint on the inside to prevent happening again.

Whoever labels these as dull cars to drive I fear does not know how to drive enthusiastically!
Don't know what the 320 is like but the 192bhp 325 (mine) and the 330:
Wind the 6 pots up from 3000rpm and they react like you are giving them what they want.
They pull to the red line on a smooth but urgent curve with great noise and drama.
The chassis gives you confidence whilst you throw it around - the balance is superb.
The driving position is bang on.
The gear change is slick and doesn't hinder fast driving.
The steering is precise and enjoyable.
You can get the back end out if you desire without much effort, but if you don't want to, it behaves itself.
The only reason people label these as dull is that they were so good that they sold in their millions. Hardly a reason to put it down!

the boot floor cracking is almost completely isolated to the e46 m3, all other e46 models don't really have the torque to tear the subframe off.
The garage around the corner who had a 328i coupe a few months back would disagree!323i's and 328i's were tearing their boot floors out before the E46 M3 joined in the fun!

I only need to know one thing, does it have an LSD?
The only E46 BMW's that left the factory with an LSD were the M3's.BMW stopped fitting LSD's to the 3 series in 1996 when they did the "facelift" on the E36 series and replaced them with the ASC+T traction control system.
(An LSD could have been fitted later on but on a 320i it's not really worth the effort)
