Are you lot sure? There are new cars, brand spanking new cars, fabricated from scratch in far flung places and shipped direct to your local dealership, inclusive of tax and other charges, for sale in the UK today for, what, seven grand.

There are people here claiming that 70% the cost of a new car is paint, which, when R&D runs into the tens or hundreds of millions, is patently not true.

What's the craic?
Hmm...You haven't bought some new parts recently have you?
Just try and cost 4 tyres, brakes pads, discs, suspension, radiatior, headlights, tail lights, and interior trim to get removed and fitted.

What's the total? I'll wager it is much more than you initially thought.

I suspect that the fact that they plastidip cars may be related.
That would make sense - price wise but their website seems clear:

"We offer a colour change permanent paint respray for only £399"
I guarantee its plasti dip - liquid wrap as they call it.

More chance of the Pope winning Rabbi of the Year than this coming out favourably for the OP.

Anyone fancy chipping in on a banger and having it painted? It must be hilarious to see the full respray result.

It's a lot cheaper for a machine to paint a mint bodyshell than to get a person to sand a car down, clean it up, fix any issues and then paint it all, using small batches of paint.

Any full respray under £1000 is highly unlikely to be a satisfactory job - many over £1000 are poor.

Materials alone for modern metallic paints are around £250.

Which leaves one day hour to prep and spray it.

My little MGB is costing me £2.5k so I would be surprised if a £400 respray on any size of car would be attractive to the beholder.

I'm paying circa £800 to have the bumpers bonnet and boot sprayed on my 5 Series and that's cheap. So no I don't believe that it can be done to a satisfactory standard for that little.

Everyone is forgetting that there is zero prep work when plasti-dipping. There's no rubbing down, no stripping down / removing bumpers etc.

Maybe £100 in rattle cans and half a days work - the matte finishes aren't too bad. But you obviously get what you pay for.

It may look nice for about 4 days.

Some scrote will pick his nose - and wipe it on the car -lifting up all the plasticote with it.

Imagine what a small stone at motorway speed will do.

They will be using plastidip for both. You can buy a primer that you lay on first which makes the plastidip permanent.
