Feet on brake pedal when stopped.
Discussion
Mine won't let me put back into drive unless I have foot on brake (and no parking brake won't do) so if I think it is going to be a quick stop I keep foot on brake pedal. If I think will be a long stop then generally I go handbrake & foot off pedal.
Car has an auto brake feature which leaves brake lights on (only found out by from reflections)- I don't particularly like it, but I can see others using it so sometimes it might be by design.

WTF, how does the car behind know your in "P" or "N" with the handbrake on, and how does he know it freaks them out.
All these mega bright brake lights these days really piss me off in slow moving traffic, especially when it's dark. More than a few seconds I leave mine in "D" and apply the handbrake. If I am waiting on lights, Imtend to stick it in "P".
As one post said, being in "P" and getting rear ended buggers your box up, happens all the time does that.
I think it's because going from P to D goes through R, illuminating the reversing lights for a moment. All these mega bright brake lights these days really piss me off in slow moving traffic, especially when it's dark. Actually I'm bored & waiting for someone, just tried going from P to D as I usually do & I don't think my reverse lights even blink!
Another issue is the stupid stupid stupid 'Brake hold' on Mercs, if you use it the brake lights stay on until you move.
As I said on the other topic my brake lights are so intense the reflection from vehicle behind causes my autodim mirror to autodim!!

I've got a friend coming over soon. I'll ask him to check my lights while I do the same experiment.Actually I'm bored & waiting for someone, just tried going from P to D as I usually do & I don't think my reverse lights even blink!

I drive a Land Rover so I am above these minor irritations (literally)
But going by the 3 hire cars (for the long motorway hauls) that have had it fitted, Stop Start does need the foot brake to work... selecting neutral in some cases results in a "Stop/Start Unavailable at this time" message on the dash board.
I really hate the change UP arrow on the dashboard in some cars... driving at night and a bright green light flashes up on the dash board... distracting as hell
PITA but such is life

I really don't see what the problem is. If I'm know I'm going to be stopped a while I'll put it in neutral and put the hand brake on, but mostly I sit with my foot on the brake. People must have very delicate eyes if brake lights hurt them.
+1I tend to fiddle when stopped at lights (change the song, look at current mpg, oil temperature, play with my willy etc.) and not just stare at the car in front so brake lights don't really bother me.
My X5 leaves the brake lights on when stationary with the automatic handbrake and I imagine other vehicles do this too... the point being that brake lights on doesn't necessarily equate to the driver sitting with their foot on the pedal. I assume the intention is to maximise visibility if you're stopped at the back of a queue. In any case I'm not even vaguely bothered by others' brake lights.

Agree it's dazzling. Perhaps they could configure it to switch off the brake lights automatically once the car is stationary?
Only if they want massive accidents!I am another that does't see the problem with brake lights, I've never felt dazzled or blinded by them. I'm guessing some people are just more sensitive to the red light than others. Curiously I think I'm less dazzled than other people in general, I certainly seem able to see better than all the idiots in front of me that brake every time another car comes toward them. The joy of country roads at night I guess.
Having drove manual cars most my life and knowing that constant contact between pads and discs especially if the brakes are hot can warp the discs I do 99.9% of the time use the handbrake (and neutral if im going to be at lights for a while). Been behind someone with the brake lights on only really irks me when its rainy or foggy and the brightness seems to be magnified.
But, we now have a DSG car - the wife has recently passed her test and can only drive an Auto so we got a VW DSG.
Leaving in Drive on a normal auto and using the handbrake is fine but with a DSG it isnt, the clutch is still at the biting point - you can see the rev counter doesnt drop when its on the handbrake but does dip to idle when on the footbrake.
So our options are:
Handbrake on, slip into N or park and foot of brake
Footbrake and leave in drive.
Our biggest fear is that when going from either N or P to Drive she (or even me - I swap between the DSG and a manual) could accidentally go to R - especially if flustered by impatient people behind.
