I am going to cut out some black card and paste it to the screen where the rear lights are as viewed from the car. Sort of an upside down face.

Ever thought of being considerate?
Was that a knee jerk quote or did you think about it all by yourself. Knob.
Just for clarity;

Thinking about how to minimise the inconveninece of your actions ISN'T being a knob
Recognising that other people have different needs and priorities to you ISN'T being a knob
Understanding and following some of the guidance in the highway code ISN'T being a knob

Deliberately irritating other road users IS being a knob
Calling someone a knob (and a whinger) for no reason IS being a knob.

That's fine - leave. Or stop whinging.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Don't like PH? Don't come back. Result is you're happier and it removes some of the whinging on here - two birds, one stone. It's not a complex concept.

I thought you were leaving? Don't feel the need to stay here with your foot on the brake pedal ;-)

I take it you have never been in a traffic jam then? Kind of hard to look away when modern brake lights fill the back of the car, therefor most of your windscreen, and I'm not sure how far away you expect people to be in a traffic jam...

I don't do it. I never said I did.

More a not-boiling-my-brakes sort of habit, than being concerned about the gentle-little-flower-behind-me’s eyes.

But when I find myself behind someone that’s sitting on the brakes for any length of time, I don’t find myself becoming agitated or uncomfortable by it. I’m just asking if it does genuinely make people physically uncomfortable, as there’s a few bullst ‘retina-burning’ comments come out every time this is discussed, where people seem to be professionally offended, and exaggerating profusely.

I just leave it in D and put the handbrake on, foot covering the brake (not on it).

I've never been dazzled by foglights or brake lights etc, and to be honest wouldn't let something so insignificant annoy me anyway.

I was behind a car with fog lights on today, unnecessarily (the fog lights being on, I mean, not my bring behind it). Furious, I was, until I suddenly realised they aren't that bright at all and I don't have the eyes of a tiny crying baby girl. Turns out I was only annoyed because it was 'just wrong' and on realising I couldn't care less, it stopped bothering me.

Really? Are brake lights such a problem for you??

They bother me, not ridiculously. Though this is a forum for like minded people to share opinion, so a rant here and there is par for course, is it not?

Calling someone a knob on a forum strikes me as a telephone tough guy and doesn't even begin to irritate. Call me one in a pub and i'd laugh at you....... Knob (See what I did there)

From the posts on here, its obvious it is a problem for some, nothing to with a crying baby girl, but mature consciousness drivers whose eyes are more sensitive to bright red lights than others, we are obviously not all the same.

I often see people wearing shades in the summer, personally I never do, so maybe they are more sensitive to bright white light than me, who knows.

But rather than ridicule those who object to sitting behind cars with the brake lights on, acknowledge it certainly irritates some drivers more than others. Not all bother me, but now and again you come up behind a car with exceptionally bright brake lights.

They can drive you nuts as well, most seem slightly high even on dipped. Fortunately I rarely drive any distance at night. How do you find them?

I suppose that is better than those with blown lamps (OK bulbs, but we were always told you put bulbs in the garden), or those who forget to turn their lights on at dusk.

Just can't win biggrin

I have a problem with foglights, when following a car with them on for more than a few minutes, the chances of me developing a migraine within an hour or two are 'reasonable'. This has happened multiple times over the years and is the only known trigger for them that I have.

The odd car isn't a major issue, a lap of a roundabout to put a car or two in front to hide them, no issue - it's when there's a slight mst and every f***** has them on it gets me.

It is actually illegal to sit in traffic with dazzling brake lights, but you are unlikely to get fined for it.

Seems strange that car manufacturers would be allowed to design and build in a hold system then which leaves the brake lights on when stopped, albeit without the drivers foot on the pedal.

Yes it does, and some are able to manufacture and sell cars which even the stig cant manage to drive it up a hill. (Watchdog).

This thread typifies the current state of PH for me. Old bds moaning about the brightness of brake lights, because it "irritates" them. Seriously?
What's irritating - because it's a car forum - is primarily the apparent lack of understanding of some of the basics of how to drive a car. I don't understand why, in a place like PH, the response isn't a unanimous "yes, of course I switch my brake lights off in a queue". The irritation is compounded when you see people not only admitting to selfishness and laziness, but not at all bothered about it.

Of course there will be people out there, loads of them, who can't get the basics of driving right or just aren't interested - dawdling about everywhere at 35-40, sitting in the middle lane for miles on end, riding the clutch at junctions, failing to dip their main beam for oncomers (or never putting their main beam on in the first place), habitually using the left lane to turn right at roundabouts, not getting up to speed on slip roads, and so on - but how have people like that ended up at a place like PH? That's what I don't understand. I don't know if that's just the current state of PH or it's always been like that.

Exactly, so how do they get away with it when it's clearly to bright and there should be use of the handbrake? If they dimmed the LED's I'd forgive the muppet in front of me.

Though as has been explained several times the modern design of cars makes it normal practice for many owners to be sat with engine off, feet off pedals, handbrake on yet with the brake lights still illuminated (in manual or automatic cars). It isn't an apparent lack of understanding of how to drive but a lack of understanding how modern cars work and it isn't the "muppet" in front setting out to inconvenience other road users. Stuff changes and the highway code takes a while to catch up between publications updated, take the advice on CPR for instance.
