I really envy you clever-stes who say that lights don't dazzle them; you must have cataracts!!!
I am with you, some of the newer vehicles have very bright brake lights, sitting in stop start traffic for 10 mins or so really do irritate me. Lazy feckers.

If I'm bored in traffic I will occasionally rapidly apply my brake on and off, to create a strobe effect on the car behind - I do this while staring in the rear view mirror to see the reaction on the face of the driver behind me.

My rear brake light is perfectly positioned to illuminate their face so it's even more fun.

Our Skoda doesn't need a foot on the brake for the engine to cut out. It merely needs the car to be stationary and in neutral.

But there are obviously better designed and worse designed systems.

On a serious note - I once got rear-ended by someone when I was sat with my handbrake on as he didn't realise I was stopped - I'd much rather have brake lights on to warn those behind me.

It is annoying, to be honest. I guess automatic vehicle drivers are worst for it as they try to creep, but modern ones with electronic parking brakes make life much easier in traffic in this respect.

Modern manual cars with hill start assist, however, assume you will leave your foot on the brake pedal in order for the system to work.

Depends on the car. My Golf doesn't require this. Stop, foot on brake, stop/start kicks in along with e-handbrake. Feet off, car remains stationary. Blip the throttle, engine starts but car remains stationary. No pissing off of the angry people who need to find a hobby smile

Foot on the brake for me unless I can see I'm going to be stopped for any length of time, when driving the Jag that is,(auto).

When people in front of me do the same I couldn't care less as I have a life.

As I said earlier, my (auto) car keeps the brake lights on when you're using the automatic parking brake with your foot nowhere near the pedal.

If this becomes a more widespread feature then we can all expect this problem to get worse even though nobody is doing anything 'wrong'.

Therefore we should all just get used to it and quit moaning about the brightness of lights... xenons included!

The old manual Subaru Forester I picked up recently doesn't need the handbrake or foot brake so long as it's on the type of road which would cause even a tiny amount of backwards roll (no good facing downhill, of course)

As soon as you stop, as long as you leave the clutch pedal down, it sits in some form of anti-rollback mode so you can take your foot off the brake, ignore the handbrake and it will only move again once you raise the clutch pedal. You are left with one foot hovering over the gas pedal and your other on the depressed clutch pedal.I thought I had a stuck caliper when I first got it and was unaware of this system, as I tried to roll back on my drive with the clutch pedal down and it wouldn't move an inch!

You also have to remember that not all cars have this system once you are used to it and use it hehe

or put that little lever in park when you have a automatic.
And if someone crashes into you the very expensive gearbox gets fked as well as the boot.
Neutral + handbrake?
I thought going from D to N all the time in an auto is not good for the gearbox.

I own 3 types of gearboxes:
Auto - foot on brake all the time
Manual - neutral and handbrake, always been used to this
SMG - handbrake only, clutch disengages automatically when stationary. It's actually the least taxing one to drive in traffic! (jerkiness/clutch wear fears aside)

What does annoy me though is that 95% of the people in a stationary queue will have their brake lights on - surely not 95% of cars on the road are autos??

Mercedes have very kindly given me a hold function so I can keep my brakes lights on when stopped without having to expend the effort of keeping the brake pedal pressed down.

I call this function "The Butler"

Good thinking>smileI can understand it when you are on a dark road stopped and keep you feet on the brake. You know, in case you are rear ended. But in a que of traffic? Or your car has such a special design that you can't use the handbrake.

Bloody mindend.

Sorry, I hadn't seen your post. What an odd feature! I won't hold anything against BMW drivers I see with their brake lights on now, though. biggrin

People are lazy and don't give a fk about anyone but themselves. This is an explanation for a great many things.

I do find the extremely bright LEDs on Audis for example to be uncomfortable when behind one in traffic at night.

Never bothered me. Prefer to cover the brake than pull the handbrake up TBH.

Ridiculous thread is ridiculous. If brake lights really are that bad then give up driving at night and stick to driving during daylight hours, you poor little babies. FFS.
