Looking for a cheap 4x4 to get us through the winter and this jeep popped up in an eBay search. looks good in the picures and from the description it seems to tick all my boxes. So after studying the pictures i see the all important crossed pistons sticker, im happy now thinking if this was a members car then hopefully its been well kept.

So did this Jeep belong to a current member?? Does anybody know the car or the previous owner??

If anyone has any info, please feel free to let me know, either in a reply to the thread or a pm.

Anything anyone can tell me about this car will be greatly received.

Here is the link.

it's nearly 16 years old so would expect it to have had a few owners by now. Why do you think the number of previous owners should make a difference to a cars condition/roadworthyness etc etc???? If each owner has done their bit to look after and maintain a vehicle then surely this can only be a good thing. Would you rather buy a car that has had 1 owner that never did anything with regard to maintenance or a car that has had 10 owners who have all done their bit to maintain it???

never buy from a dealer that wants to do the old "sold as seen " bit . He is a dealer,

High number of owners often suggests the car has problems and the owners keep getting rid after a short period of time because they are sick of spending money on it. Given the typical British public I doubt that all those owners looked after it meticulously, it's amazing how many people think an MOT is a service and then it has a full service history as far as they are concerned.

Ooh, I like that. Local-ish to me too! Fortunately for you I cant persuade my OH to share my love for this shape, she only likes the GC's.

ETA - Some of the worst "Honest John" style used car buying advice being spouted on here. Buy on condition.

I read that as the seller explaining that the car is being offered with no warranty - scaring off people who assume otherwise.

They're also reminding people to inspect BEFORE bidding because once you've won it - it's yours - you have a legal obligation to pay (hard to enforce in reality - sadly)

Consumer law gives the buyer some limited protection thereafter - but mostly limited to what the dealer claims and what faults are obvious at the time of sale.

Many people see bidding on eBay as 'thinking about buying' and many people think every car they buy should have at least 3 months warranty or whatever other stupid idea they've picked-up - debunking that will filter out some of the eejits who'd otherwise bid.

You're leaping to conclusions with zero evidence - as someone just said, go there, kick the tyres, buy on condition and condition alone.

God you're all a bunch of misogs, I'd give it a good going over before I bought it but there's nothing that screams nail about it. I'd look up all of the old MOTs on the .gov website though to see what the previous advisories were before the new one, 12 months MOT is the only thing that niggles me, might need a load of bushes/bit of welding/dodgy emmisions for its next one.

Agreed, but not always. This is the main reason i am asking if the car belonged to a current member or if it is known to a current member so then i could hopefully glean some inside info on it.

At least the dealer is being straight about the sale - none of this sneaky "mention it after the test drive and deal have been done" st you read about.

Every reputable dealer would treat a trade sale this way. They are just stating you are buying a car with your own eyes and ears, there is no warranty so take it or leave it. They are doing this to complete the sale within the law.

For me cheap solid winter motoring with a robust and fairly reliable old truck. Can't speak for the others but assume the same.

Pretty much this.

The 4.0 straight six is a lovely old school reliable lump. They've got a certain charm and they're comfortable old buses to bimble about in. And seriously accomplished off road, especially with a bit of modding, if that's your thing.

Avoid the 2.5 (petrol and diesel) powered versions. The 4.0 is the one to buy.

These old jeeps have bags of character, the 4.0 litre six will drive to the moon and back.

This particular one looks well, if it were closer I'd have a snoop around it myself.

I had a '98 cherokee for a while, it is one of the best cars I have had

One of the best mass produced 4x4's ever built.

Rock solid petrol engines, good suspension travel, twin solid axles, locking 4x4 system

Very good workhorse offroad.

Just don't buy the diesel version (Italian VM ste)

Exactly, have a good look at it, you'll know if it's worth a punt then, number of owners nor mileage would bother me for that age of car and money, as others say buy on condition.
