Think i will definitely be pursuing this one. Those of you who own or have owned one, what would you consider a fair price??

The price is reasonable, ignore the dross about number of owners, a few of these in the early days may have been personal plate changes, they used to trigger the owner no.
The main thing with these is they need servicing properly, axles, gearbox all have service intervals. Check the fluids are all clean & fresh. Need too check the box changes OK, the transfer box & axles are quiet. Wheel bearings can be weak & if left will destroy the halfshaft as the bearing runs on the shaft, not an inner race. Most spares pretty cheap & the 4 Litre lump goes on forever. Check the heating & cooling work, my mechanic has done a spate of heater matrixs on these. Bear in mind that economy isn't a strong point, expect about 18MPG overall! You might see 20 on long run.

Are these switchable 4wd? I saw one getting drifted at Matchams raceway and it looked awesome.

4.0 six in these can trace its routes way back so it is a largely very well proven unit. That "woodette" trim though - the americans really do not understand luxury! Getting back to the car as a purchase, as long as the drivetrain is sound, why the hell not? Its not exactly loads of money

RWD in normal use, the lever to the left of the gear selector engages the 4x4 system with a few option part time 4WD, high ratio 4WD (use on loose or slick surface) and low ratio 4wd

if you take it for a test, try to engage all modes of the 4x4 system, you may find that having disengaged the 4x4 system with the lever, it might take a mile or so to actually disengage (with quite a clunk) this is not unusual

I had the 4.0 and loved it. The only thing was the floor had more holes than a holey thing with holes in it. Wasn't worth patching it any more but I would have another one in a minute. Check it out and if it passes all your tests buy it.

PH seem to like this as a winter hack. What's the appeal?
Reliable and very capable off road.

One of the reasons I went for a WJ instead.More room in the boot as well & a nicer dash.

I paid £1,400 and have since done a 3" lift on it as the leaf springs were sagging somewhat.

Also bear in mind that tax is also very cheap due to their age.

These old jeeps have bags of character, the 4.0 litre six will drive to the moon and back.

This particular one looks well, if it were closer I'd have a snoop around it myself.

I had a '98 cherokee for a while, it is one of the best cars I have had

Never seen a 3dr one befor, did it come to the uk?

Not in right hand drive. I've heard of a couple of imports though.
We also didn't get the 4.0 litre with a manual gearbox. A 3 door 4.0 manual would be a nice car.

Every reputable dealer would treat a trade sale this way.
It's not a trade sale, it's a sale to members of the public.

If it was a trade sale it wouldn't be advertised to all and sundry on Ebay.

Only thing that really kills Cherokee's is rust, check the sills, bottom of rear side windows under the glass rubber & the roof along the roof seam, boot floors do go but mainly on the older ones. Rear springs have sagged on this one, budget a few hundred to replace, tow bar on it too so could have had a hard life. If engine & box are good & there is no rust they are a fairly safe purchase, would have it if it was local but its fairly strong money for one. Alot of people buy them thinking they can cope with the fuel bills but soon get fed up of feeding them. I have had a fair few now, but now run a Grand, more space inside & better built.

I used to have this exact same model & in the same colour. I bought mine brand new in 2000 & thought it was great. It would make a perfect winter car. The "Orvis" bit meant you got a bonnet with fake vents (if they aren't there then its been crashed), colour coded arches, a nicer stereo (Infinity?) and some fancier leather. They are pretty basic, but to be honest that's no bad thing as when something does go wrong it's a lot more straightforward to fix. There were loads of this Cherokee built so getting hold of parts isn't difficult. I had something fairly major replaced under warranty (wouldn't come out of low range) which took a few days so it's definitely worth checking the 4WD works properly. Check under the rear seat as the CD changer went there. Its smaller inside than it looks, so don't be expecting something massive but it's by no means tiny. Tyres etc aren't expensive to replace as I'm pretty sure they are only 15" wheels. I'd have another like a shot.

People questioning 10 previous owners (on a 16 year old car).

A). It's not uncommon for people to get bored of a car after a year - or less - and punt it on.
B). I imagine many owners bought it as a 'winter hack' and sold it on the next year - to the next owner to do the same etc.

Hi Dragon
I always have one of these as my general hack/snow/tip/pay and play things.. They are enormous fun, very comfortable and reliable. I'd say this was worth £750-£1000... what I have noted over the last few winters is a premium price attached to these things the moment one snowflake drops. The XJ (To be all officially Jeep about it) is exceptional in the snow. Go for it...
Cheers
