Depends on your definition of budget I suppose. Without knowing the specific tyres, a bit of a meaningless statement.
Well anything bar the best on a car like this I would class as budget! Kumho and Avons spring to mind lol

I remember driving one of these for my old job a few years back. It was only 30 miles or so, but it was amazing apart from the gearbox. If only these came with a proper manual it would have been near perfect.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but the gearbox is supposed to be rubbish in these

If you only drove 30 miles not sure you should comment on the smg! It takes a while to get used too and once you master it its very rewarding

I loved the SMG in a regular M3 I had. I think its brilliant fun, just a different kind of fun to a manual.

Absolutely love the CSL's.

I'm not surprised you can feel the weight difference. I can feel the difference in mine coming from a fully spec'd CS to a basic 'normal' M3 and its probably only 50kgs or so.
I also don't get the complaints about the SMG. It does seem that some are smoother than others but I loved it in mine, the clunks and clacks and the thumping changes.

Love the roar from the CSL air box as well.

Complaints or not about he SMG/ride, it justly deserves the splendid reputation it has - BMW's 996RS?

“…hill starts are a very delicate balance of brake and throttle.” Apologies if it's already been mentioned but I haven't read every post. If you put your foot on the brake and pull back and hold in the downshift paddle, the SMG system will increase the revs a little so you can pull away slowly and smoothly with assisted throttle control. Also works very well for reverse parking. Great write up, thanks for sharing, Matt. Enjoy it!

A lot of choice, some great cars - what have I missed? wink
Remove the i8 and replace with 1M.

1M is OK.

Will the M2 trounce the 1M? The i8 is pretty nearly supercar level

Not for me, I'm an old fashioned petrolhead, anything hybrid or electric will never make it onto any list of mine.

I have some sympathy for the old stuff. The 2002 was the fore-runner for the splendid cars to come afterwards ( & also save BMW's bacon) and I see the i8/i3 is the same light -= they are ahead of Audi/Mercedes/ Etc

Wildly over-hyped in my view and I've had plenty of time in them.
The E92 M3 is a better car, better engine, much better gearbox - in Manual or DCT.
Get one with the BMW Performance seats and it is superb. The Performance exhaust just tops off the glorious V8.
It's probably not about which is the better car. The CSL is a very special and very interesting car. It's different and BMW has done nothing as exciting since. The GTS was IMO, nowhere near as special as the CSL.

Yes, I agree, the E92 is the better car. In the same way as the latest F82 M4 is better than the E9 3.0 CSL. But it's not interesting, nor anywhere near as special. One day it might be.

But for the moment, the E46 CSL is probably the best M3 of the lot - and I include the E30 Sport EVO.
Sorry CSL better than an e30 m3 EVO? depends on if better means because its faster, bigger power, newer or because it sounds nicer, of course it wins hands down but for pure reason d'etre, a simple car that fits like a glove and the handling is otherworldly out of sight, definitely not (thus reflected in the values today), a 15 minute drive in a good unmolested car on a decent road will highlight very quickly why the e30 m3 is probably one of the greatest car sports car built not just by BMW but by any manufacturer.

I ran a standard E30 M3 for a few years a long time ago, it was a great car & I do miss it, but the CSL is in a different league IMO.

In outright performance, maybe, but for overall driving experience , I'll take the E30. Both are awesome though.

CSL > E30 M3 for me, but it's pretty close. When it comes down to it, I just find the E46 marginally more exciting
