I remember driving one of these for my old job a few years back. It was only 30 miles or so, but it was amazing apart from the gearbox. If only these came with a proper manual it would have been near perfect.
If you only drove 30 miles not sure you should comment on the smg! It takes a while to get used too and once you master it its very rewardingAbsolutely love the CSL's.
I'm not surprised you can feel the weight difference. I can feel the difference in mine coming from a fully spec'd CS to a basic 'normal' M3 and its probably only 50kgs or so.
I also don't get the complaints about the SMG. It does seem that some are smoother than others but I loved it in mine, the clunks and clacks and the thumping changes.
Love the roar from the CSL air box as well.

Complaints or not about he SMG/ride, it justly deserves the splendid reputation it has - BMW's 996RS?I also don't get the complaints about the SMG. It does seem that some are smoother than others but I loved it in mine, the clunks and clacks and the thumping changes.

“…hill starts are a very delicate balance of brake and throttle.” Apologies if it's already been mentioned but I haven't read every post. If you put your foot on the brake and pull back and hold in the downshift paddle, the SMG system will increase the revs a little so you can pull away slowly and smoothly with assisted throttle control. Also works very well for reverse parking. Great write up, thanks for sharing, Matt. Enjoy it!

Will the M2 trounce the 1M? The i8 is pretty nearly supercar level

Not for me, I'm an old fashioned petrolhead, anything hybrid or electric will never make it onto any list of mine.griffgrog said:

Wildly over-hyped in my view and I've had plenty of time in them.
The E92 M3 is a better car, better engine, much better gearbox - in Manual or DCT.
Get one with the BMW Performance seats and it is superb. The Performance exhaust just tops off the glorious V8.
It's probably not about which is the better car. The CSL is a very special and very interesting car. It's different and BMW has done nothing as exciting since. The GTS was IMO, nowhere near as special as the CSL. The E92 M3 is a better car, better engine, much better gearbox - in Manual or DCT.

Yes, I agree, the E92 is the better car. In the same way as the latest F82 M4 is better than the E9 3.0 CSL. But it's not interesting, nor anywhere near as special. One day it might be.
But for the moment, the E46 CSL is probably the best M3 of the lot - and I include the E30 Sport EVO.
