£100K Garage: James Ford

S-Class for business, Cayenne for family, a 500 for his girlfriend and a GT-R for fun see to James's £100K

Name: James Ford
Previously owned: Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign, Land Rover Freelander, VW Corrado, Mercedes E320 CDI, Mercedes CL500, Mini Cooper S, Audi A8 and Audi A6 Allroad to name a few...
Currently owned: Mercedes S350 LWB (W221)
On the shortlist: "I really want to upgrade my S-Class to an S63 (W221) or CL63 (C216), but that all depends on my family life. I could be looking at Range Rovers and Cayennes instead soon..."

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG
Cost:
£24,975
Balance: £75,025
Why I chose it: "It's the best version of the best car I've ever owned, a no-brainer in my opinion and also in the right spec. I love how the black glass roof contrasts that beautiful metallic Mercedes silver. It's perfect for those long motorway blasts and a great way to move my clients around."

After your own Mercedes ubersaloon? S63s on PH this way!

Nissan GT-R Black Edition
Cost:
£41,495
Balance: £33,530
Why I chose it: "It was a tough choice between this and an early V8 R8. The GT-R won out as I borrowed one for a couple of weeks back in 2012 and loved every bit of it, which surprised me as I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to interior finish. I just love the brashness of it and how even though it has 4WD, it still wants to kill you if you start to think you're better than it!"

There are nearly 100 GT-Rs for sale on PH currently; see them all here.

Porsche Cayenne Diesel
Cost:
£24,950
Balance: £8,580
Why I chose it: "I have a big dog, and I occasionally like to pretend I can do outdoors stuff like hiking and camping; none of the other choices have a big enough boot! I know a lot of people would rather look at a L322 Range Rover or Disco 3 but I've had too many bad experiences with Land Rovers. Plus, with this being a late first-generation Cayenne, it comes with all the toys and it won't be driven enough to for the looks and slightly dated interior to worry me. And it's a Porsche I can put the dog, my girlfriend and camping gear in..."

See here for every Cayenne on PistonHeads.

Fiat 500 Abarth
Cost:
£8,250
Balance: £330
Why I chose it: "This one is more for the other half, her aspirations car-wise are a little different to mine. A white Fiat 500 has been her dream car for a while now. The Abarth is the only 500 for me and in white with low miles it ticks all the boxes. It's the perfect car for those little trips to the shops without drawing attention or struggling to find a big enough space.

From Esseesse to Ferrari Tributo there's plenty of Abarth 500 choice. All cars for sale here.

"There's even enough change for some roof bars and a dog guard for the Cayenne!"

One of the best garages I've seen.

Good combo of cars, although my garage would need a Caterham, so the Cayenne would have to be substituted for a SWB Defender.

Otherwise, your tastes are similar to mine

Nice list. I'd have to make a couple of changes but the feel is the same as mine, even down to the "500 for the wife, but I'm choosing so she's not having a diesel and will have to put up with a fast one instead" choice smile

Wow - that has to be hands down the dullest list you've printed so far!? I'm sure there will be a lot of love for it on here, so know I 'm probably on a limb, okay...
But it would have been sooo much better with these changes as suggested:

Pretty good choices except the Cayenne. if you want a vehicle for camping and the country that is just not it.

Otherwise great choices.

Good choices! I love the Cayennes, the Abarth looks like a lot of fun and well what more can you say about a GTR!

Clearly a man of taste, but I just can't gel with the GT-R. 997 911 perhaps?

Would a 595 not be better for the missus?? So it's yen the best of the best for her too??!

Don't know about the calls of boring /bland tbh, it's a decent pick really for an all round set of metal (excl the cliched and over played track car many go for and I bet wouldn't use more than half a dozen times in a year and which to be fair not everyone PH'er wants)

Get rid of the S63 and Cayenne, get a E63 estate instead. Frees up money for Caterham.

To be honest, I thought about a track car instead of the GT-R but im not built for Caterhams etc... and I know it's a hypothetical list, I still wanted it to be realistic to what I would actually end up with if I had the chance to make it so.

The Cayenne isn't the best choice for a 4x4 I know, but I have a soft spot for them. The 500 is more than enough for my other half, she's only 22 and anything quicker would terrify her!

I know it's a bit dull to some people and lacks colour, but it's to my taste and ticks all my boxes.

S63 is just sooooo much more comfy.
I agree about the reservations with GTR tho.

Oh God no! Not the diesel Cayenne?

If you really MUST have a 4x4 at least get something less Cayenne-y!

It would only be a Cayenne or an L322 Range Rover, and as my mums has spent more time in a workshop than it has on the drive, I went with the Germans!

Boring... how can you describe a GTR as boring. Have you ever driven one properly?

A pretty decent way to spend a hundred bags if you ask me! Although I'm not too sure about the Cayenne either; I'd probably go for an X6 just to annoy people.

Driven one and been in several on both road and track. Would have an R34 instead.

It's more of a machine (with the computers doing everything) than an enthusiasts car IMO. Great car and the perfect daily, but would not have one as a weekend toy.
