I've recently bought a new car and needed extended European cover (I'm currently in France and will be here until May next year) so took out an insurance policy with LV who are one of the few companies to offer this cover. I haven't yet sold my old car and currently also have an insurance policy for this through Esure.

LV have requested my proof of no claims, as per usual. So I contacted Esure to get this. They are refusing to send me this document as the policy on my old car is still running and apparently you can only use your proof of no claims on one car. LV are threatening to cancel my insurance if I can't provide it.

I asked Esure to remove the no claims from the policy on my old car, so I can use the no claims on my new car. They say they cannot do this as they will only supply insurance on this particular car (Scirocco TSI GT) based on at least one years proof of no claims.

I explained the situation to LV and asked if they could provide me with a quote to add my old car to the new policy to release it from Esure and therefore get the proof of no claims. They explained they can't do this as I had informed them my intention was to sell the old car, this then classed it as temporary insurance which they do not offer.

Their only other solution was to insure my new car with 0 no claims, which would cost me over £1700.

This is all the more complicated as I am in France with not much use of the internet or a phone at the moment, and very little time to spend trying to research and speak to these people.

Does anyone know if there is a solution to this problem that doesn't involve either car sitting uninsured and that isn't going to cost be an extortionate amount of money that I don't have? Its ridiculous when I have 10 years no claims!!

Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

SORN and cancel the insurance on your old car. Then see if you can get some sort of cheap "layup" insurance on it.

You can only use NCB on one vehicle at a time. Not sure how you've got to 10 years NCB without realising how it works!

Not sure how much it helps as not with LV, but both my parents have a two cars and they both have polices which mirror there NCD for both cars. That is with Zurich.

As above, try seeing it your insurance company will mirror the NCB on your other car. Alternatively use the NCB for the new car and get layup insurance (should be less than £200 I would have thought going on a quote I had recently) until you sell it.
