Estate car max budget of 10k - BMW E90/Volvo V50/Audi A4 or?

A couple of people have suggested the Subaru Legacy, could they elaborate on the good points? I'm looking for a similar car and would be interested to hear their views. (Sorry if I'm seen as butting in!)
