for a really cheap car with a nice exhaust note i have always been a fan of the later e34 bmw 520
these are a really bad choice of car, as you get the same running costs as a 525 without the extra power, but because they had the single tail pipe exhaust, this was a lot more cheaply made, it does not silence anywhere near as well as the 525 and you get a really nice noise from the i6 with it

BMW M3?

On the 500 Abarth. The Grande Punto Abarth also had the same engine, and a very similar exhaust system.
Much as I love M3s they do not have a great exhaust note. Induction noise maybe.
And the 500 no 4 cylinder could have the best note.
Undoubtably a B6 S4 with a Millitek. Sounds like a Nascar.

Another vote for the Alfa Romeo Busso V6 3.2 (GT / 156 & 147 GTA) - amazing sound!

Other contenders that already been mentioned:
BMW E46 M3
Nissan 350z (biased I know!)

Oh good. More 'it isn't a real Mini' chat - that never gets boring

Maybe? Have you ever been in an M3 with a carbon non standard air box?

From the original post "And be low maintenance..."

While its great to see a lot of the posts about fantastic sounding V8s, V12s etc, they don't really fit the original request very well. Reading between the lines, if the guy has a budget of under 10 grand and has just had twins, he probably doesn't want to spend half his life by the side of the road or in a petrol station!

All I'm saying is that the MINI is not bad for the money, and it has a bullet proof 4 pot, not that it is necessarily the best 'money no object' option

Corolla AE86, Corolla Compressor, the 20v Fiat Coupe, Abarth Punto Evo with supersprint system - just a few off the top of my head. You also might be able to get a nice Mk1 Focus RS for that money and they sound the business. Rovers K and T series sound pretty good as well.

350Z, maybe with an exhaust swap to free up some noise.

I would also have said the TVRs and Alfa V6s mentioned above, but then saw your requirement for 'low maintenance'.

For something a little cheaper to maintain than the majority of the above, how about the Mk2 Focus ST. Has a great 5 Cylinder warble and can be improved further with an after market exhaust.
Have heard that about that ST - pre-facelift nicer looking too.

The idea of a CLK55 for under £5k is interesting though...
Another vote for the ST. Even in standard form they sound great.

With a decat and a remap they put on quite the fireworks show at night biggrin
