Kia Picanto - anything better for my grandmother?

Evening all.

So my grandmother has decided she would like a new car. She currently drives a 15 year old 1.2 3dr auto lupo, which is sat at 44k. She has owned this from new, and it has served her well. Now she is getting on a bit more, she is finding the lupo a little too low to be clambering in and out of, and her very elderly (some 90+) friends really struggle.

So she wants something a bit taller, that will be easier to get in and out of. She has also decided that 5 doors would make life easier when taking passengers. It must be auto and obviously performance is not an issue, as long as it isn't completely gutless when loaded with 4 pensioners + pensioner stuff.

She has expressed interest in the current Kia Picanto, and asked me to have a look. At first glance it seems a sound little car, with good reviews and of course Kia's excellent 7 year warranty.

The 5 door auto comes in at £10,495.

Is there anything out there that we should be looking at? This isn't really my usual type of car to be researching, so I genuinely have no idea if there is anything better out there for the money?

Obviously if it was my 10k I'd probably be looking at E46 M3's but she wants new, so that's not an option.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Sounds perfect to me - good little cars really.

I'll probably give you more for the Lupo than its PX value if you're remotely nearby....

My parents like theirs.

The smaller engine with an auto-box might be a bit gutless.

If she would tolerate nearly new, then the previous model A class ticks a lot of the criteria.

Yes. The i10 is more comfortable I believe (smaller wheels).

Honda Jazz usually works well for the older folk, not sure why.

My mum bought a 61 reg picanto 1 litre, 3 cyl manual. She loves it. She's an active and young 63 years. She went for a 5 door because the doors are smaller and access is easier in tight parking spaces. Main dealer servicing is good and reasonably priced. It's been fault free completely and just passed it's first mot. I've driven it a couple of times and it's no rocket but it's cheap to run and in a weird way the 3 cylinder harshness is good!

I assume granny isn't doing >20k a year, in which case the Kia 7 year warranty might swing it. If she is, then the i10 5 year warranty is better.

Look at the kia venga, nice high up driving position with acres of glass for visibility. Actually quite a pleasant car to be in. Short overhangs which means easy to park too.

A Hyundai i10 is a good little car by all accounts, but surely she couldn't go wrong with the Kia in her circumstances.

Kia Picanto and the Hyundai I10 are really the same car.

My daughter has the 1.2 top of the range I10, and it is a fantastic little car, my wife had a then brand new bottom of the range Picanto on an 06 plate, also a fantastic little car.

If you look at the I10, pay more attention to the latest model, it is. (as you would expect), an improvement over the one before.

I doubt granny will be doing this, but I found the I10 excellent even on motorway journeys at full motorway speeds plus a bit for good measure, in anything except the windiest of conditions.

You get out of the car and wonder how it has shrunk so much, compared to how it drives.

The Kia 7 year 100,000 mile warranty, and the Hyundai 5 year unlimited mile warranty also aren't to be sniffed at.

The Bus?

Get a 1 year old Fiesta/Fusion, miss the depreciation, and get a better car that you won't have to sell for peanuts.

IMHO.

We have a new i10 2014 model, it really is an excellent car and much better than anything else in this class.

The auto model comes with the 1.2 engine so has enough power.

We've got a 1.0 Premium, which we got in May. We've put 7k miles on it in that time, and I often choose it in preference to our other cars as it's quite a fun steer.

The Soul has quite a cill inside the door step that can be hard getting your leg over if you are elderly or have mobility problems.
The boot also has quite a cill drop as well.
