Therein lies the rub.

In principle, I really like the idea of RPM's concept - take an unloved variant and make it look and drive better, but not a GT3 lookalike - but the elephant in the room is the bore scoring and other issues that these things can suffer.

Ok, so take a £10-12k 996, send the engine to Hartech for a proper rebuild, set you back about £8-10k then spend a few £k on suspension. What car could you buy for less than £25k that would compare? Alternatively, hunt for a car that Hartech (or autofarm) have already worked on, saving a lot of cash in the process.

Cosmetic mods are personal choice, for me I'm not even sure I like aerokits, could be tempted by that ducktail though smile

yes Of all the 'bits' of styling, that does look the tastiest.

I can see a sort of not-quite rat look 996 - the sort of car you use and don't worry about, which in the real world, is often the Achilles heel of 'nicer' stuff IMHO. Thinking along the lines of some of Magnus Walker's creations; nice but not 'too perfect'.

Guys the sort of engine woes you are talking about are only the tip of the iceberg based on the experience of outfits like Hartech on road cars. I was in the workshop of Dorset Sports Cars the other year when Tim showed me what had failed in the engine of their 996 C2 race car, the con rod has snapped clean through so its not just chocolate bearings and cylinders, its chocolate rods, crankcase and crank as well. I am sorry I wish RPM all the best but I wouldn't counternance for a second using any of these cars on track. I have seen the boxes of parts EMC used to rebuild the engines for Pete Morris in those two 996 race cars, one of which won the Championship this year. £13K in parts alone! It can be done as that car has proved now over the past two seasons but its very serious amounts of money just to get to a robustness level that all the air-cooled and front engined cars had as stock.

I agree the ducktail looks the mutts.

I'm thinking this myself at the moment, my 996 has anything it needs mechanically but it currently needs front & rear bumpers respraying & there are a few other minor dings as you'd expect on a 13yr old car. Just wondering whether to leave them & then maybe get a complete respray done a few years down the road when 996's are worth £45k wink !

Possibly a bit naturally tatty (not "distressed"), but mechanically sound, well setup and used as the maker intended is my philosophy.

This is RPMs thread so I won't keep bashing this 996 as no criticism is intended towards those guys, they have a solid rep and this looks like a tasteful well chosen set of mods.

I think you are missing the point though, the old cars could and are raced with practically no prep to the mechanicals this is the context against which the 996 has been judged, unfair maybe in the wider context of the entire motoring world but its how it happened nonetheless.

As a usable daily proposition the 996 beats a lot of aircooled cars in that it can be used and doesn't rust.

For £25k i'd argue you have quite a few options!

Are there? I can't think of many that have useable rear seats, decent steering feel and everyday usability that aren't too old for rust to be a serious concern.

I know it's not as pure, but at a fraction of the money the E46 M3 makes the 996 look rather poorly designed and engineered, inside and out, IMVHO ;-)

For an e46 M3 you need to leave a grand or two for when the boot floor rips out. Then there's a question of fixing the rust it will likely develop.

That is a point I have been making for many years and sadly seems to go unanswered. Back when I could have afforded to buy a 964 C2, even a race prepped one or a bit further back an RS it was that area that put me off big time. Miss time a change on track and its bye bye to several £K, get one that hasn't been pampered and has some oil leaks maybe needs top end rebuilds and some new cylinders seems to be another several £K easily. They have always been more expensive to run/maintain than the 944/968 for example in non-turbo guise whereas I reckon the 944/968 are broadly similar to older M cars on running costs. The air cooled fanatics don't seem to like talking about their hugely expensive to rebuild engines though.

Well, its about time that someone acknowledged how good vfm the early 996s are. I was fortunate enough to buy an early 996 Carrera that had been lavished with love and money with uprated suspension (KWV3 with a fast road/track geo), an uprated LSD, uprated brakes, aerokit and a lightweight interior although having owned it for 3 yrs and having enjoyed the peace of mind of a Hartech engine, sold it to a fellow PHer nearly 2 yrs ago. The external wrap was on the car when I had and although it wasnt to everyone's taste,I thought it was distinctive. I'll let the photos do the talking (and the decals were all part of a branding exercise by the friend who created the car). I knew when I bought the car that the cost to the previous owner was significantly more than I paid and as one PHer has already said, buy a car off someone who has lavished the money for you to enjoy in your ownership!

Remeber seeing this at a couple of PHSS's and seeing it up for sale. Wasn't it an old Porsche magazine project car? Was pretty damn cool either way.

At 25k the words/letters/numbers V8 M3 and some change make a 996 seems like a bad decision personally...

£25K on a car that very few other people would want after you had finished with it.

The previous post quoted was arguing for the positive of having 'usable' back seats... See the point being made now? If you want back seats then a focused sports car isn't a car you'd realistically te be buying anyway. I
For 25k then why not have a properly focused sportscar and buy an Exige... Everyday usable, just about and about as focused as it gets whilst still having a roof.

Personally I'd buy a 996 Turbo or if I needed real seats then if buy a big power R33 GTR and pocket 8k change for fuel and a holiday.
