Can anybody (DonkeyApple?) point us at a general checklist for Classic purchasing? I know there are a fair number of weak spots, but a list would be really useful?

A few of us chucked our views down on the classic Rangie thread in the classic car sub forum.

In my book it's all about the rust. A rotten frame is going to mean troublesome electrics also. Cheap repair work is probably the real killer. Still plenty of gems at the sub £5knlevel but you have to be really smart and patient to find them. It's a car that is really is easy to turd polish.

Thanks, I'll have a look there. Currently have a 90 and an L322, previously owned an SIII and a P38 but the Classic is a growing itch for me which I think I need to scratch before it's too late.

I do think it's one of those cars like the mini that you do have to live with for a while for the ability to sit back and know you are a true connoisseur of travel.

I was driving one of the latest ones the other day and I've got nothing remotely negative to say about them other than their only minor failing is that they aren't an original Rangie. At no point while behind the wheel did it cross my mind to drive across Africa or just simply go down a random lane because it was there.

even the Daily fail is commenting on what a classic design the original was;

Land Rover developed just 30 of these prototype vehicles and according to the car's chassis number, it is the 38th vehicle to have been completed.

There doesn't seem much left on that which looks original. Modern dashboard, v late rear quarter panel, 300Tdi engine....

Also, isn't that a Solihull plate? Weren't Velars 'YVB'?

Yup.

Wrong dash. Wrong Trans tunnel. Wrong hearbox. Wrong engine. Wrong lights. Wrong mirrors. Wrong trim.

Has no originality so isn't really worth that much.

Features a single pipe exhaust system, how things have changed!
Equipped with starting handle (remember these?) too, as standard.

Found this on YouTube (poor quality): Old Range Rover Ad
I used to have a 4 door classic with a fairey overdrive, made the mpg just manageable, and spent 6 months with a busted starter motor. Hand cranking that V8 is a great alternative to going to the gym. I also once did the trick of winding it ( the car), in gear, backwards into a tight space.
A car without a starting handle is rubbish.
Why can't a diesel have a 12 bore blank starter like a Fergie?

I prefer the later 4 door 80s yuppie ones with rubber bumper overriders (not the horrible brooklands ones).

I also prefer the Anniversary Countach.

I probably have no taste.
