Hi,

Just looking for confirmation from what I have read online, but no mention on the GOV.UK website, when you now sell a vehicle, the DVLA now automatically refunds you any remaining full months road tax? Is this correct? You don't have to fill in any forms now and send anything to the DVLA?

Interested to find the answer to this as I have just sold a car and was wondering how to reclaim the tax

It's meant to happen automatically when you send the v5 off...

The V5 getting to DVLA is the trigger for the refund, but yes that's correct in that you don't have to apply for a tax refund separately any more.

Yes, just done it - send the v5 as normal, cheque came in the post 2 weeks later. Cheque will now sit there for months.

Sold a car recently. Didn't have to do anything and a cheque just arrived in the post.

How does this work if the person who owned the car has passed away? Do i need to inform the Dvla to send cheque to my mother?

I love how the DVLA said that no longer producing a paper disc will save millions in printing and paper costs yet they send a printed, paper cheque for a refund!!

DVLA have really pissed me off with this.
I bought a cheap car in September, taxed it and sent v5 off.
Dvla after 6 weeks said they never received it.
Could not find v5 green bit so had to pay v5 £25 fee
Did a covering letter stating bought the car in September and I funded the tax so any road tax is mine as I taxed it.
Got v5 today - says I bought the car 14th November - and looking online it is now untaxed.

As it happens I have part exchanged it and it's already with the dealer - but presumably my tax has gone to the previous owner which is bloody ridiculous - I reckon there will be a number of pissed off people who taxed the car pre the changes - then they sell the car and the last owner gets a little windfall thanks very much.

They haven't thought about the transitional 12 months at all.

Car traders won't like this once they realise we can all now find out how long they've had a car "in stock" by just going on line and seeing when the tax expired ...
