Son now 21 and looking to upgrade his car, currently a Renault Clio GT,
Must be under 4 years old , smaller than a 3 series , frugal enough for some longish runs , and a bit of fun and able to peak the interest of a 21 year old lad. Oh yeah 18k max.

Current contenders are BMW 120 coupe, BMW 123d, Seat Leon FR, VW Scirocco 2.0 TFSI, etc.

Whats your definition of reasonably economical (frugal enough)?

The money allocated for depreciation on those sorts of cars should instead be used to cover warranty and extra fuel costs on a 5-10 year old Porsche/AMG/etc.

That's what I'd want if I was 21, in fact it is what I did - I bought an SL55 AMG when I was 21, it hardly depreciated and warranty covered the only big repair.

Just a different way of going about things, probably wouldn't cost that much different!

Keep the Clio and spend 9k on boozy, debauched holidays and invest the rest.

Spend somewhat less than £18 I and get something more interesting any slightly older, albeit with poorer fuel economy

About 20k a year. When I say frugal 35ish on a run over 25 pootling around.
I had a SLK 55 AMG and a XKR for a while and he wasn't blown away by that type of motor.

Out of your shortlist the Scirocco gets my vote. How about a TT of some sort?

Removed.
I ask for opinions about cars not opinions on how I or my son spends his fking money, I take it you haven't got an opinion on what car, in which case get back to scrubbing the piss stains off your fking mattress you knob.

Just to clarify, all his own hard earned and saved cash, not given by Mum n Dad , not in a trust from dotting Nana n Gramps not an inheritance , his. wink

Nice.

If it's his money let him decide.

Bit of a left field suggestion: Abarth 595 Competizione.

But there's not much to work with here. It's almost easier to list the cars you can't buy with 18K.

Not necessarily this particular car but one of these should do the trick

Yep, that's what I was going to suggest.

If I had 18k to spend though its not where my money would go... I'd probably get an M3.

Megane 265?
2 car solution?

... Got to say, I like the idea of a GT86 and it sounds better than my ideas above.
