I thought the days of the fuel pumps adding that extra penny after self serving fuel had long gone.
My last two fuel ups were to an exact amount of £20, I ensured to take my finger off the nozzle trigger, as soon as I get to the cashier...... the mysterous 1p is charged. Is this down to faulty (or too accurate a) fuel measuring or what? The Fuel Station was not interested in my comment about it.

Its not the penny but the principle - Can I complain and who to?

Fill up and pay by card. Who cares if it's 77.63 litres. (99.29 sterling).

My BP station never bothers about the overstated 1p. They sometimes knowingly give me 1p too much change.

Don't all pumps do this?

I complained to asda I think end of last year or early this year, the reply basically said that the pumps had been checked and the reason is likely because when you shake the nozzle and it bangs about (and when you put it back), this apparently can set the nozzle off adding that extra 1p?

I didn't bother replying.

Principle or not how much do you earn per hour? Then look at how much its costing you in each fill up over the rest of your life and then look at how long it takes to complain.

You are literally spending money to complain.

Its pointless.

Cue the Not The Nine o'Clock news sketch and the cashier pressing the ½p-extra button. spin

Anyway...don't buy fuel in whole pounds, buy it by volume...problem solved.

If you had a penny for every time this happened to you, and you started with 'n' pennies, you'd still have 'n' pennies as you will have spent an additional penny on the fuel but immediately re-couped this penny when you had the penny for every time it happened.

(Unless you have been visiting filling stations who don't ask for the last penny, or have a 'give a penny' pot on the counter. In which case, bully for you - enjoy your 4p.)

I will. I'll buy myself 4 penny sweets. I think fizzy cola bottles will do the trick. Jealous? rofl

You'll have a job. Getting 4 penny sweets for 4p is confined to your childhood.

Inflation and vat innit. Bloody government.

I've noticed this on some occasions but there are more important things in life to worry about than this.

OP, its black friday!

Why are you bothering with this?

Go and get yourself a bargain and I guarantee you will forget about the 0.01p :-)

You've had the fuel you've paid for (probably), the fact it doesn't come in round pound lumps is irrelevant.

Depending on the price of fuel (and how the pump is able to be set up), N litres x X pence per litre does not always equate to a round pound.

That is why.

Who wants to put £20 in anyway? Means you visit the petrol station more often than if you fill her up?

BTW, I was a petrol pump cashier for ten years, and trust me it's more irksome for the staff than the customers!

I do worry about some people, clearly they need to look at there priorities if all they have to worry about is £0.01.

It's not about the money, it's about the principle!

These petrol machines are either dishonest and sneaky or inaccurate and unreliable, adding money to our bills when our backs are turned. I blame the EU, what with tricky Spanish waiters adding on service charges and extras and EU accountants bumping up our bill, the machines have cottoned onto this European way and are robbing us blind.

If you're paying by cash just hand the £20 and don't offer the penny. End of
