I'm yet to hear any straight 4 that I like, including the S2000. I saw my first Alfa 4C the other day and was absolutely horrified at the nasty, loud farting drone that it made when the owner booted it. I guess as a sports car they feel it has to be noisy and with only 4 cylinders to work with it's always going to be pretty monotonous.
What about a Millington Diamond?

I can't see that it would be cost effective to do such a swap.

And even if you did, you would end up with a car that is slower in a straight line, doesn't handle as well, and is thirstier. And you would have destroyed any originality in a car that may well be destined to be a future classic.

If sound is what it's all about, buy a V6 instead of a 240.

Me, I quite like the burble that the standard car makes.
Yes, making a V6 look like a Sport 240 would probably be the cheaper way to get to the same target I guess, but I agree with your future classic comment - one of the reasons it's under consideration...

I had a Milltek 3" downpipe with 2.5" catback (also Milltek) on my Leon Cupra, that sounded better than the stock exhaust and gave a nice burble on idle. A bit like the blub-blub-blub-blub old Saab 900 Turbos make smile

And better than the flatulent-hippo-farting-through-a-hollowed-out-treetrunk noise the current VAG 2.0T makes. Yes, I know it's claimed to be a better engine (with it's coked up inlet valves and failing chain tensioners smash) but the 1.8T sounds better.

IMO they sound awful, like a fart in a beancan. Now this is a great 4 banger engine note: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vap2nDUe27o

And no, I've never heard a VAG 1.8 sound anything other than anodyne or annoying.

The trouble is that silencing tends to detract from character. I bought aftermarket exhausts for the RX-8 and the Elise - in each case I chose a quieter one than the one I liked best. Just had to compromise on noise. The Mrs bought something a bit louder for her 350Z - sounds glorious, maybe a little loud for my tastes!
I love the sound of my 350Z (with after market exhaust) but sometimes it is a bit too shouty, I had to do an emergency extraction from Bramhall of my slightly dopey middle son the other day at 1 am, for some reason went in the 350Z, missus said she heard us arriving back from some miles away biggrin oops.

I swear it converts most of the energy from Super plus into sound, some degree of forward motion, but not as much as the apocalyptic racket going on would have you believe, sort of the opposite of those cars where you get pushed by an unseen force, its like having a very pissed off Brian Blessed under the bonnet.

+1 for the classic Saab 900 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WLq1MMt90c. In line 4 cyl turbo engines don't have to drone.

(I really miss mine)

yes, the resonated version, god only knows what the unresonated one is like.

I persuaded her that the non-resonated one might be a little too loud!

Angry car is angry.

I'm not that enamoured of the noise the standard 2ZZ makes. The one in my Lotus sounds better than it did when it left the factory, with a 2bular exhaust and TRD airbox, but it's still not great.
