This was my immaculate CL500 I sold earlier in the year... for just £4k... even the guy who bought it, couldn't quite believe how much car he was getting.
In Kent these are pretty rare. I think this does qualify as exotic as the layman could not differentiate it from the CL55 or CL600. At 5m it cut some presence and the performance was pretty good.

There are a few CL500's up my way but they always turn heads. It's the scale of them. The SL is a great shout. Even more so than the CL, they look 'a million dollars', especially the R230.

Any Porsche

I owned a 944 Turbo - a load of late 20's girls walked past it without looking at it and came into my house (I knew one of them).

They asked me what I drove - I said a Porsche 944 Turbo

"A PORSCHE !"

They suddenly wanted to look at it, sit in it, take photos etc

It cost me £6k at the time and their parents typically drove new BMW / Mercs
This is really sad. No interest in it until they realise some sort of perceived wealth they they're all over it.

In answer to the OP my bright yellow Elise gets plenty of attention. Had several comments about my 'Ferrari'.

It reinforces my belief that many people are inherently stupid.

Down here in Devon it's anybody with a P38 must be a millionaire says the financed Mondeo driver who probably pays more in the first month than the P38 cost.

I had a body kitted yellow 996 which was oft admired.

I also once had a parcel delivery guy say "you must be doing well", looking at my driveway. I had a 330ci e46 clubsport and a 2005 645i on the drive, albeit with a crap private plate. I didn't have the heart to tell him between them they cost less than his van.

I had several people who bought cars on finance wonder how I could afford the 6 series, including my sister who bought a brand new mini coupe for triple the money.

TVR Tuscan can be had for less than £15k, and certainly looks the part.

Agree any Porsche does make peoples ears prick up, I was suprised by that as part of the appeal of the 986 for me is that they're fairly uncool at the moment (being stuck between being old enough to be cool for it and not new enough to be ostentatious or "show off") and I didn't think it would attract much attention as a result. I'd only expected the odd chat out and about with enthusiast types but it seems amongst non-car types the badge alone is enough. A 996 would be on my list if the criteria from the op applied, to the layperson a £15k 987 would probably count.
