Not so much 'champagne car/ lemonade money', more cars that the layperson would view as exotic or perhaps even as a 'supercar' for sub £15K.

This could consist of anything from a wild looking kit car, to something from a premium brand manufacturer that has depreciated into affordable territory.

Preferably something that other PHers would see on the road and think 'must take a look at the classifieds' when I get home. Bonus points for stuff that is actually very good.

I'll start off with a rather obvious answer- 996 911:

996 has been discussed enough for us all to know its potential pitfalls, less-than-stellar reputation and used values. but I suspect 90-odd% of the general public would think it a rather fancy sports car. I've pictured a cabrio here, ofcourse I personally would have a hardtop with a manual box, thanks.

Things like this are also within range with a bit of a haggle:

But it's from Motorhub and will therefore be made mostly of string and lies.

Let's have 'em...

More than once I've overheard that my 996 "set him back at least £50k"...

People thought I was loaded when I had my 6k VX220, despite having 10k fiestas themselves!

I think e46 m3 in right trim still looks like it cost a few quid. Mercedes SL500 is another good one. Supercharged range rovers are another.

Without a doubt!

Maybe even a 4200 might squeeze under 15k. Rear lights look better on the 3200 tho smile

Lotus Esprit 2.2? Or even the S2 Elise, which still looks like it fell from space.

Can you get a Corvette in the UK for Sub £15K?

Debadged Monaro keeps the uninformed guessing. Not sure if it qualifies as exotic those the noise helps?!

Or on the flip side a 5 year old S350 in black!

I think some non-car or new car only people look at the badge, the shiny stuff, the size and the condition to estimate the value of a car. If I knew nothing about cars or used cars it's probably what I'd do. A freshly machine polished Range Rover Sport or Maserati 3200, Porsche Cayman and Jaguar XK would probably have neighbours thinking you were doing even better for yourself than you are. I don't think any of them are really 'exotic' just nice and expensive looking.

That car has been on sale for absolutely ages - I was eyeing it up as a potential purchase had I won the PH £15k competition a while back. Looks lovely, but I doubt a non car person would be all that impressed compared to a shiny L322 or XK8.

Way cheaper. This is a big part of the appeal- 'it must've cost you an arm and a leg?!'.

It's not the whole point though- a nice blingy RR will have the same effect, but would never be considered 'exotic'. It certainly won't thrill you in the same way either.

Joe Public sees a VX220 and thinks your in some kind of mini supercar, and that's more appealing to me.

Some great stuff so far, keep them coming...

I had a feeling they were but hadn't checked. As you say, they look way more! Even to a relatively savvy enthusiast such as myself. Total bargain.

Any Porsche

I owned a 944 Turbo - a load of late 20's girls walked past it without looking at it and came into my house (I knew one of them).

They asked me what I drove - I said a Porsche 944 Turbo

"A PORSCHE !"

They suddenly wanted to look at it, sit in it, take photos etc

It cost me £6k at the time and their parents typically drove new BMW / Mercs

My five year old nephew described mine as a "space ship car".
