A very brief back of a fag packet calculation shows that just taxing this lot will cost £850+ per year (excluding the track car)? Plus we need to assume that items such as tyres, fuel, servicing, etc. are a factor of mileage and therefore unrelated to the number of vehicles owned. There's still insurance, MOT costs and finding somewhere to store all these cars. These issues are more relevant at £10k than they are at £100k.

I'd like to take the no-compromise approach and have a car for each occasion but on reflection, I think I'd prefer to have a couple of good cars than 5 that I can't afford to keep in reasonable condition. Am I doing this wrong?

PS. I realise that this is a very boring approach! smile

genuinely enjoyed reading this ... great idea, and a great selection of metal for the cash ... my only substitute would have been a Megane Coupe for the Micra ... some would argue theyre not reliable but the 1.6 engine is pretty decent and doesn't mind being neglected at all.

Good thinking that man!

I'd have to stamp on that particular cockroach though. Shirley you could find a Ka, Corsa, Yaris... ANYTHING except a Micra?

Hah, I pay more for the four banger diesel estate alone here in The Netherlands. I'd be elated if I could tax a whole fleet for that... smile

Great idea and commentary BC, particularly the “automotive equivalent of the cockroach” comment!
Having 3 of the 5, I bound to like your selection, but you’re right about needing the Portamig for the MX5 and 944 wink although nappy brown makes quite a good disguise.

cheers

Great idea. Would have been good to see an old Land Rover disco in there for off road action.

Best 100k garage so far by miles.
I was hoping someone was going to do it on a much smaller budget.
Hats off to the OP.

Hope you have a MIG welder for that lot !
The A8 is alu bodied isn't it

I have a "Portamig" - I own (and consequently maintain) old Opel/Vauxhall cars in the main

My money is on the MX5 and 944 needing some welding sometime soon.
Yeah, dont use a MIG on the A8 unless you want it to look like a T2000 that has got a bit hot.

Great alternative with the £10k budget but I'd really like to see a 'what fleet can I buy for the cost of a new average family hatch' or rather, as Golfs can easily cost £25k then it's a £25k budget?

Never thought I'd find myself saying this....but Micras (2nd Gen 'proper' Nissans) are great cars. Not 'Petrolhead' cars of course, but reliable, well made, etc.
Having inherited one 6 years ago, it's had nothing but annual service plus brakes needed since. MOT man says they rarely need attention.
Boring to some maybe, but aren't cars 'meant' to do this?

After 2 LS400s and an Elgrand van, I'm back in the Micra and in no hurry for expensive alternatives.

Great idea OP. My mind boggles at the idea of £100k too!

I'm not a massive contributor on RR but I recognise you from over there so knew it would be good. As a Porsche-obsessed former Golf GTI and current/serial MX5 owner, who learnt to drive in a new K11 Micra, I entirely approve of these choices!

An excellent idea to look at a 10k garage....much more in line with what the average pistonhrd could afford BUT what about the standing costs? Not all cars suitable for Classic Insurance surely, but I can guess that with MOTs, road tax and insurances - to say nothing of repairs (even parts) - would maybe be a bit excessive. It's not the cost of buying ther 'tin' that is the main thing but keeping the wheels turning. However, lucky man who can accommodate five cars anyway.....hope they're not standing outside to allow the tinworm to invade them.woohoo

Brilliant!!! This is much better than the (now tired format of) £100k garage.

Love the 944.
I couldn't agree more, I'm getting very bored with £100K Garage and this is much more of a challenge. Fun too

Great choices, they have all been on previous shortlists of mine, even the Micra. I've never owned any of them though.

I do get what you've done and why, but I have to say, I'm seriously uninspired.

Within this uninspiring list of parameters, I don't get why you wouldn't have gotten something like a Subaru STI type R. These can be had for cheap nowadays (maybe 5k), and will fill a couple of slots, as well as go hard on the track.

Agree a £25-30k budget is probably more realistic.
