If you got to the point where you offered to give them a deposit and they wouldn't do the deal without you taking finance, it kind of indicates that they were telling you the truth in that the deal wouldn't stack up for them. As you said, they do need to make a profit. Selling lots of cars by giving most of your profit away just makes you a busy fool.

You also said that they had the car in for 3 weeks, which in all honesty is a fairly short space of time. Most large dealerships have either a 60 or 90 day stocking policy so it would be considered fairly recent stock, certainly not old stock. If it's a popular car the salesmanager obviously thinks he can do a better deal on it with someone else.
