I can't believe that is bid to over a grand! I cannot believe it has a reserve either!
Wow
I like it. At least from the photos, it looks rather clean, and these are definitely a rare sight on the road because I guess they were crap when they came out.. but 2.8 RWD coupe... Wow

It's certainly in very good condition but it's a bit of a 'meh' car. I owned a Sapphire 2 litre DOHC about 20 years ago, my first car that wasn't a banger, and even with all the rose tinted nostalgai it wasn't a great car. Slow, very slow gear change with an enormous throw, slow steering and barge like handling. Not a car that would have been featured on PH when new.
I had a 1.8 on an 'H' plate when it was virtually new and I liked it alright but then I got a 2.0 DOHC while mine was in for service.Completely different car in my mind. It went like a rocket in comparison and loved the gearshift on it. IIRC that was the one with the synchromesh in reverse right?

No, they are a rare sight because they rusted tremendously. They were very good when they came out. As Car magazine said in the late 70s: A BMW 6 competitor - for a lot less money. As with the Manta the later ones in the UK market wore Opel badges as the Monza. Lowtimer said:

Thanks. I rather like that. Possibly not enough to buy it, but it's an interesting project. I'd imagine the market for these will be fairly limited, non?

The 2.0 Twink engines had a few problems when new though

True, but then again, try a 3.0 carbie Granada auto coupe, which was its equivalent. All of these things are relative.
The facelifted version, the 3.0e injection Monza was the contemporary of your XR4i and was a fair bit quicker than the 2.8 Royale, the 4-speed auto was betetr than the 3-speed, and I liked the updated 80s looks. A white five-speed manual Monza was a car I really, really wanted in the mid 80s but I could never afford one and they seem to be amost extinct now. One like this ould be a fun thing to waft around in even today. I did some marketing work at the turn of the 80s/90s for teh UK Irmscher importer and they had a 3.6 stroker engine conversion for them. Yum.
I see there's a manual one for sale here for £8.5K, which seems ambitious but if it means it goes to a good and caring home that's fine

Oh yes, for me that Monza is on a different level altogether. I think that's well worth the money - much quicker and more fun. Almost 20mph quicker top end and 2/3 the time to sprint to 60The facelifted version, the 3.0e injection Monza was the contemporary of your XR4i and was a fair bit quicker than the 2.8 Royale, the 4-speed auto was betetr than the 3-speed, and I liked the updated 80s looks. I'd be happy with that as a daily runner/holiday cross Europe car
