I can't believe that is bid to over a grand! I cannot believe it has a reserve either!

Wow
I like it. At least from the photos, it looks rather clean, and these are definitely a rare sight on the road because I guess they were crap when they came out.. but 2.8 RWD coupe...

Looks like a £100 car with £3400 Ford scene tax applied hehe
A mint example of a rare 25 year old car, is a '£100 car'

You sure this is the thread for you? rolleyes

I'd say with out the "scene tax" it's value would probably £1500ish, but I reckon someone will pay the asking smile

I was taking the piss on the price. A poverty slow estate is not exactly a sought after car. So rare or not, that seems daft to me. Nostalgia does have limits!

Loving the Royale. My uncle worked for Lawrence of Kemnay and I always remember him rolling up in one of these from time to time.

Wow
I'd far rather have the Royale than the Sierra, I presume that it cost a lot more new too.

£3500 for a 2.0 DOHC Sierra laugh
I know, the price is a little strong, but I think it looks great
It's certainly in very good condition but it's a bit of a 'meh' car. I owned a Sapphire 2 litre DOHC about 20 years ago, my first car that wasn't a banger, and even with all the rose tinted nostalgai it wasn't a great car. Slow, very slow gear change with an enormous throw, slow steering and barge like handling. Not a car that would have been featured on PH when new.

I had a 1.8 on an 'H' plate when it was virtually new and I liked it alright but then I got a 2.0 DOHC while mine was in for service.

Completely different car in my mind. It went like a rocket in comparison and loved the gearshift on it. IIRC that was the one with the synchromesh in reverse right?

No, they are a rare sight because they rusted tremendously. They were very good when they came out. As Car magazine said in the late 70s: A BMW 6 competitor - for a lot less money. As with the Manta the later ones in the UK market wore Opel badges as the Monza.

In my world about 500 notes. In the parallel universe which is Ford forums, or Ebay, about twenty million quid.

Thanks. I rather like that. Possibly not enough to buy it, but it's an interesting project.

I'd imagine the market for these will be fairly limited, non?

Yes, although the early Sierras had pretty slow steering, about the same ratio as the non-M E30 BMWs, ( over 4 turns lock to lock ), this model should have quite nice weighing with a much faster ratio ( less than 3 turns lock to lock ) or about the same as a modern E46 BMW.

The 2.0 Twink engines had a few problems when new though

It's a nice old bus, I loved my old Manta, but these are VERY slow for a big 2.8 coupe when you have the autobox. A mate bought one when they were very cheap and you can waft about Ok but my old XR4i was like a racing car in comparison.

Plus seriously thirsty

True, but then again, try a 3.0 carbie Granada auto coupe, which was its equivalent. All of these things are relative.

The facelifted version, the 3.0e injection Monza was the contemporary of your XR4i and was a fair bit quicker than the 2.8 Royale, the 4-speed auto was betetr than the 3-speed, and I liked the updated 80s looks. A white five-speed manual Monza was a car I really, really wanted in the mid 80s but I could never afford one and they seem to be amost extinct now. One like this ould be a fun thing to waft around in even today. I did some marketing work at the turn of the 80s/90s for teh UK Irmscher importer and they had a 3.6 stroker engine conversion for them. Yum.

I see there's a manual one for sale here for £8.5K, which seems ambitious but if it means it goes to a good and caring home that's fine

Oh yes, for me that Monza is on a different level altogether. I think that's well worth the money - much quicker and more fun. Almost 20mph quicker top end and 2/3 the time to sprint to 60

I'd be happy with that as a daily runner/holiday cross Europe car

I have the bodyshell of one round the back of my garage under a tarp.

Unfortunately it's too far gone to be viable.
