It had to be a Senator or Royale - the rear side windows are really distinctive. I thought they had a wood strip on the door. Maybe that was the original version, rather than facelifted cars like this one?
More likely is you are thinking of the Royale equivalent - that certainly had more wood/Formica (everywhere)

BMW e28 528 manual - the exact car I was taken to school in for a year, and made me interested in cars! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1986-BMW-528-I-SE-5-spee...

Love that!
Had a 528i 1982ish vintage. Seem to remember the tyres were a metric(?) measurement which meant they were a pia to source.

I like this 47k maestro van. These things were common back in the day. My parents had a maestro that did 110k miles (purchased at 5k) without issue aside from the inevitable rusty arches! http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C571913#

A 1.6L like a friend's Dad had - only 47k! http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C374901

My dad had one like that. It was crap, but he thought it was brilliant. Then he had a diesel Montego which was surprisingly a lot better!

I had one and it was crap. Slow as fk. The 1.6 Cavalier would run rings round it.
To be honest, Vauxhalls of that time were much better than Ford's. The Astra, Nova and Cavalier were certainly better than Fiesta, Escort and Sierra. I'd also say that the Manta was better than the Capri and the Calibra was roughly a billion times better than the Probe.

Funny how the values say otherwise

Before '82. the Opel Senator had a fair bit of Formica too! - I wonder when they stopped fitting it. I really like these, especially with the red velour.

Values of classic cars don't tend to reflect how good they were. Besides it's the rwd mk1 & 2 escorts that are worth much. The Mk3 and 4 aren't. Sierra values are hardly strong either.

Good point. Even Sierra RS Cosworths aren't all that high. Then again, most of them are Cat C laugh

Just out of thread budget (although personally I'd like to see it raised to £10k tongue out ). I love these and have been tempted for years; not sure if the drive might let me down though.. One day maybe.

Yes, thanks for refreshing my memory! I think Michelin were the only manufacturer?

I'm all for some wood in a car (f'naar), but I do like to see it all match. The door cappings are completely different from the dash in that pic.

The red velour is fantastic though.

Stupidly expensive and rubbish. I read once (conspiracy theory?) that Michelin provided free/very cheap tires to manufacturers to get them to use those wheels so that customers would be tied into them.

They're the reason that almost every MG Montego left seems to have MGF wheels.
