What is the appeal of the Soarer? The press didn't seem to like it very much when it was released, is it just reliable, cheap V8 goodness or is there more to it?
Personally I think it looks better than an XK8 - is far more reliable and costs 80% less.If you delete all 4 exhaust boxes it sounds like a NASCAR at high RPM too.
What's not to like ?
My old 1JZ Soarer had a banzai engine (almost 300bhp and loved to rev), a very planted and biddable chassis, and I grew to love the looks. However, it was all confounded by a truly spasticated old-tech autobox which put me in the correct gear about 10% of the time. It wasn't broken, just really unsuited to the characteristics of the car.

As an aside, the ad says Simon J Robinson recently passed on, shame as I used to like seeing what he had at the side of the road although I do know someone who bought a car from him and wouldn't buy another.V8RX7 said:

I'm after a new daily driver, criteria are something interesting, economy north of 30mpg, a reasonable amount of practicality and fairly reliable (I do 50 miles a day). Budget is around £1000 though if I don't tell SWBMO it can be more - going camping in Scarborough is just as good as going abroad right?
The current favourite is a Rover 400 Tourer, though it's a 900 mile round trip to get it. That Escort 1300 really appeals too but I reckon it'd get ruined with my use .

That is superb, however being 'powerfully built' I'm sure I couldn't get away with driving it in the same way I'd feel silly in a Mini . Plus it'd never be where I left it when my mates realise how easily they can be moved!
I'm struggling to think of reasons not to buy it. Around town they're unbeatable because they can fit through gaps only bikes can fit.ATM said:

Picture the scene of driving it round your nearest city centre wearing a gorilla costume, on a warm sunny day with the windows down. That alone almost tempts me to do it!For 10,000+ miles a year you'd be mad to chose a small car, or an old car. That Escort will cost a fortune in welding and repairs I'm afraid. If it were a Mk.2 then I'd say go for it, and transplant a modern-ish engine like a Duratec/Zetec. But it isn't so don't.
Having an older retro/classic is all very well, but when you start to put miles on them then expect to be doing regular work, and for them to let you down. There has to be a good compromise somewhere though, and looking on Autotrader, there are a few Mk.1 Focus ST170s going at around a grand. I love the clean lines of the Mk.1, and they were well engineered and well sorted cars right from the start. If the MPG is a bit iffy, then go for a 2.0i Zetec or 1.8i.
ETA: This Focus is described as a "lovely car" and "Excellent bodywork". And then they show this as the main photo. Yes, lovely, especially the splitter:

To be fair, with the exception of an 11 year old Astra (very modern in my books), my daily drivers have normally been older cars, with my 1995 Cavalier rising from 120k in 2012 to 146k in 2014, requiring only routine maintenance, it's currently getting a bit of a refresh otherwise it'd be back out!
That said, a clean looking ST170 would be nice!
