Right Retro/Classic folks, I'm in need of some inspiration and reckon you guys can help. I'm after a new daily driver, criteria are something interesting, economy north of 30mpg, a reasonable amount of practicality and fairly reliable (I do 50 miles a day). Budget is around £1000 though if I don't tell SWBMO it can be more - going camping in Scarborough is just as good as going abroad right?

The current favourite is a Rover 400 Tourer, though it's a 900 mile round trip to get it. That Escort 1300 really appeals too but I reckon it'd get ruined with my use frown.
Rover 75?

Pretty interesting as cheap modern cars come. Somewhat retro inspired style and interior, decent specs, plenty of engine choices and if practicality is a major concern the estates are huge.

I would go Merc W124. Last forever, supremely comfortable and quite classy. Prices seem to be going up but you should get a decent one for the £1.5k mark that hasn't done too many miles.

Both 75s and 124s have been on my radar, a mate has a habit of collecting Mercs so plenty spares!

A real rarity now and my first car was a black one like this;

£3995

They come in fair a fair bit of ridicule and mocking but you know what......they are an absolute hoot to drive and suprisingly nippy too.

That's bloody lovely!

I just couldn't bring myself to spend 4 grand on a Metro, though. frown

Anyone seen or posted this yet? A real rarity.. Especially with just 86k - and the 2.3 litre!!

If the price stays low tomorrow, I'll try and win it.

I had a 1984 black stolen recovered one for my first car back in 91.
God I loved that thing. Swapped the wheels for larger turbo ones.
I'll see if I can dig out a pic.

I like the Metros, not 4k worth of liking mind.

I like a nice 9000 2.3, but I'd rather have one which looks to have been cared for with 3x the mileage. I think you'd be mad to pay the current bid let alone more.

Woody I'm not sure, I think it's a worthy investment. Each to their own, but if it stays under 2k I won't be able to resist.

How about 'Bertie'?

I had a new one of these back in 1990, it was red on the bottom half & white in the top half, with big MG stickers that change from red to white as they crossed to line. If I remember G112SES was the reg. It was a pile of crap but I thought it looked good. I have never been able to get an image off it from google.

Fair enough, it'd make a lovely car when done, but I reckon there's £2k in bringing it up to standard for the miles with the arches sills, bumpers, wheels and seat all obviously needing work and the car looks to me like it's led a cherished life until 2010, after which the service history goes and the mileage ramps up, which'll impact its value and I suspect they'll top out quite low because as interesting as they are, I can't see there being massive demand in the future.

I'd rather have this, pop on some aero wheels/ditch the tow-bar, keep an eye out for a couple of wings and wind up the boost.

Can't really argue with that price Woody.

I really do fancy the 9000 Aero as a project now, I'll see what price it gets up to.

If I can figure out how to get down to Oxford without requiring the sale of a kidney then that Saab is ideal for what I'm after, I had one in the same spec a few years back, it was a cracking car!
