Under 50,000 miles though.
Even then it seems a bit rich.Pre 'Bubble' low owner, low mileage cars seemed to hold a premium of a couple of hundred quid over slightly more used examples, now they are a couple of grand more expensive, and even then you wouldn't be too surprised to see it re-advised with pictures on a white background for £10k within a week.
Personally its beginning to put me off retro cars. People holding on to anything remotely old, tidy and low mileage or putting a high price on like we can expect to see it roll through Bonhams in a couple of decades time. A white, strange spec Audi A6 with 50k on the clock is never going to be a museum piece or even particularly desirable. £3k just doesn't make sense to me, but it'll probably sell which is the problem for me.
Although some fantastic machines have been posted in here, I remember circa 10 years ago when I was waiting for my driving license a thread with this budget would have bought 6 series, 8 Series', E34 M5s, SEC Mercedes, C32/C36, E55 AMGs, tidy late XJS', 944s, 928s and so on. Now usable examples of most of those for the money are but a dream, but th what has taken up the slack for the money? To my eyes it mostly seems to be tidy/usable examples of otherwise not very interesting or desirable older cars, and that just doesn't appeal.
I think my next purchase is going to be something from the early 00s because anything older seems to actively attract a 'retro' tax.

Stourton is also quite a salubrious area as well.

Those late 90s /early 2000s cl's - what the are they really like to live with / maintain? Are there any specialists about who know them inside out? Are parts extremely expensive? The prices they now go for must mean many are being broken for parts, therefore 2nd hand parts will be plentiful & cheap right?

I recently purchased a 1995 C36 AMG for a little over thread budget, very nice 3 owner with lots of history, there were a reasonable number available, most below budget, some worthy, some not.The £5k 6 series would have had inner wing rust, the 8 series dodgy electrics, the E34 M5 a general bork fest etc etc. The bargains you think of 10 years ago have been replaced (unsurprisingly) by cars 10 years newer - early XK Jags, Bangle 6 series, C32s , CL Mercs, Boxsters etc.
To be honest I've just had a look on eBay and there are a lot more AMGs in this budget than there were when I last looked, but you can still catch a glimpse of the bubble from time to time:

11 grand. 80k Miles
Anyway...
Whilst I'm there moaning, this 55 looks like a good bet.

Well looked after, tasteful upgrades and no nasty wheels like most of the E55s it shares it price point with.
And CLs have gotten silly

£2990!
Not really classic or retro, (yet again all these Mercs above aren't quite either...) but I'm sure it will be in the future:
Behold, a V8 Volvo S80 with 315bhp, 4wd, and cooled seats, 2007 model, £45k new, yours within budget:

Stunning amount of car for the money.
Also, they are more American muscle or Vantage in sound than a Mercedes Lump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Vh0eidjUg

I had the chance to buy a one owner from new CL500 for about 5k. It had just 33k miles. Anyway, i didnt, and it was bought by someone else. Ine of the seat stopped working (wouldn't allow people in the back), and Mercedes quoted 1500 quid to fix. Still, i do love the shape and hanker after the bi turbo cl600.
The CL gets a lot of flack for stuff like this based on what main dealers charge to fix them, but if you're anywhere near a dealer in any of the cars in this thread you've gone wrong IMO.Proper STAR diagnostic machines can be had for a few hundred quid from eBay, there are a fair few breakers and pattern parts out there (think i ve read a ABC pump is 1k from merc, 300 quid pattern on one of the engines) - I do think its possible to run one for sensibish money as long as nothing drastic electrical happens, the seat was probably a duff control module.
I want a bi turbo 600 as well, but tidy ones are still nearly ten grand. With 500s so cheap I'm beginning to wonder if there's much point

Had one of these back in the day and from what I remember it was very sore on petrol.

Second example of these old pillarless Merc coupes that I've posted here:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...
There was a very clean white, manual example available up until last night too...
Are these beautiful old Mercs a bit overlooked atm, or is it just me?
