I lost my virginity in the back of one of those. Xaero said:
I quite like the Cavalier, my dad had 2 of them. The last Vauxhall I actually like to be honest, apart from the Monaro if that counts.
I loved my Mark 3s - but the Mark 2 was always my favorite. I regret never having one. That car is lovely (I'd change the wheels) but as some have said, strong money (I suspect he's not making much anyway).I have Monaro and it goes back to Vauxhall to get serviced and is adorned with the griffin on every surface, so it counts (just)

Nice to see original wheels
For some odd reason I like this.
I watched someone wreck, and I mean wreck a near mint one of these over a two year period not too long ago.£1750

They were looking for a cheap runabout, and an old chap they knew who was giving up driving sold it to them for a good price. It was a genuine two owner, 80,000 mile example that had been garaged its whole life. It was a beautiful, straight, original example.
It went to the scrapyard two years later without a straight panel on it, and had suffered numerous theft attempts. To them it was a cheap appliance, and they ruined it. I was horrified.

The next Escort was panned by CAR Magazine for a cheaper, worse rear axle arrangement and supposedly led to the step change that was the Focus?
I think it's a shame when people trash straight examples, though a part of me thinks some of the stuff in this thread seems to be hyped up due to age, when that's their only merit.
Wasn't the Compact Valve Hemi universally disliked?

Mention the CVH and most condemn it.
It wasn't THAT bad.
I owned 8 cars with it fitted.
It was Model-T tech for its era, just look at what other manufacturers were producing in comparison at the same time. It was a cheap mass produced low tech boat anchor in it time. It wasn't THAT bad.

The MK3 was a step up for your average buyer - bigger, more usable with a hatchback, better equipped etc however for the enthusiast it was a disaster - FWD instead of RWD and no easy way to upgrade it unlike the MK1/2 where Cortina/Granada/Capri parts fitted.

I see both points of view - I think it's a shame when a rare car in good condition is ruined however I wouldn't want to own a Mk3 even an RS Turbo variant.

Loved my Series 1 RS Turbo - even with mild modifications the (Ford schedule serviced) CVH never gave a single problem.
Even a shed XR3i was fine and I abused it to hell.
But the less exciting models were dull dull dull

I get the desirability of a XR3i or an RS Turbo, in their day they were desirable cars. After all this was a time when people aspired to owning top of the range Fords and Vauxhalls.
