If you were in a hot Escort in the late 70s/early 80s and saw one of those in your mirror, you knew you were in for a proper Italian tune-up! smile

What would these be like as a daily driver.
I know they are not the quickest diesel but they have a certain appeal.
Very vague steering and manual gear change compared to anything built in the last 20 years.
Describing these as slow is being very kind.

Great ride quality and character and extremely tough and robust.
Oh yeah, 40mpg is a pipe dream.
These old buses can run on stuff other than diesel wink.

Who cares if you are only getting 25mpg when you are only paying 65p per litre for your fuel.

My Mum had a 131 Supermirafiora back in the day, when the cambelt snapped she traded it in for a Fiat Argenta. Not a patch on the 131

You might care about having 72bhp in a 1500kg car though. I'd get to work quicker on my bicycle....

Wasn't there something weird about the Turbo where they had to elongate the wheelbase by a couple of inches for some reason ?

Sort of, although it was actually the nose they had to elongate on the Phase I models. The 21 was actually available in 4 wheelbase lengths depending on whether it was a transverse 1.7 engine or inline 2.0, or whether it was saloon or estate.

There is just something right about those, perfect proportions and the colour works so well on them. Easily the best looking Golf ever made in my eyes. I have one in my fantasy lottery garage and I'd happily park it next to the Muira.

That's great, just build yourself a 2 litre engine to drop in it.

Nice car.

I like these because they are so under rated. Seen by many as a poor man's "Not a proper" Porsche, but actually a decent drive and in S form with reasonable power.

It's like lots of cars that have been "badged". If they hadn't been "badged" they would have been seen as excellent, instead they are seen as poor.

If the MG Montego Turbo had been called the Austin Montego HSi, it would have been remembered as of the fastest BL cars ever made. Instead, it is remembered as a poor attempt at an MG.
