I think the 320i probably felt a bit slow partly through expectation and partly because it was such a smooth engine which didn't develop a lot of torque low down. I suspect that it is one of those cars which has surprisingly good performance if it is thrashed.
Looking at the contemporary figures, it wasn't underpowered at the time.
Alfa Romeo 75 2.0 Twinspark £12,500 - 148bhp 137 lbft 0-60 in 8.9 seconds; 121 mph
Audi 90 £14,749 2 litre 115bhp 127 lbft 0-60 in 9.8 seconds; max speed 122
Citroen BX GTI 16V £13,244 160bhp 133 lbft - 0-60 in 7.6 seconds; 135mph
BMW 320i £13,100 129bhp 128 lbft - 0-60 in 8.8 seconds; 118 mph
Ford Sierra 2.0i GLS £10,757 115 bhp 118 lbft - 0-60 in 8.6 seconds; 112 mph
Honda Accord EXi £12,390 122 bhp 122 lbft - 0-60 in 9.4 seconds; 113 mph
Mercedes 190E £15,300 122bhp 131 lbft - 0-60 in 10.5 seconds; 122 mph
MG Montego Turbo £12,455 152bhp 169 lbft - o-60 in 7.2 seconds; 124 mph
Peugeot 309GTi 1.9 £10,545 130 bhp 121 lbft - 0-60 in 8.3 seconds; 120 mph
Vauxhall Cavalier SRi130 £11,291 130bhp 133 lbft - 0-60 in 8.7 seconds; 120 mph
VW Golf GTi 3 door £10,495 (1781cc) 112 bhp 115 lbft - 0-60 in 9.6 seconds; 114 mph
VW Passat GT £13,686 112 bhp 117 lbft - 0-60 in 10.5 seconds; 119 mph
So, from test data figures (all the cars here had been tested - none of them are manufacturer's claimed figures) - from What Car August 1988 - we can conclude that the 320i wasn't particularly slow in its day!!

who'd have thought the Montego would have been the fastest, although it is the only turbo on the list yes?Looking at the contemporary figures, it wasn't underpowered at the time.

I've been eBay searching 'xj6 manual' almost daily for about six months and its a habit that has continued even after buying one!279 said:
The e type bonnet and classic motorcycles in the background and short, sharp ad does make me think this is the type of guy I want to buy a car from! I really Would love to run this along side my x300 xj6 manual But alas it'll be keyed and pranged in no time parked outside.
Fine looking Jaaaaaaaaaag! Call me a pedant, however, but when I see something like "Matalita steering wheel" in an advert I wonder about the seller's enthusiasm. I mean, it says Moto Lita on the actual steering wheel! How hard can it be? Hey ho, at least this is better than the ads you occasionally see for a "Jenson", and I remind myself that approx 147% of people who post in PH think that cars are stopped by things called "breaks".

So what you're saying is that the 320 is not slow as long as you're careful what contemporary 2.0 cars you compare it to?
What I am saying is whether by design or otherwise, it's a slow car.
I'm saying it's not slow compared to similar cars. I don't think you can compare it to the saloon version of a hot hatchback. What I am saying is whether by design or otherwise, it's a slow car.
But I agree, it isn't a fast car. I wouldn't say it's slow though, not compared to a awful lot of cars of that era.
I
Yep, that’s a real shame Is it? It's only an old Skoda.
